Turning his energy to his senses, he combined his chi-senses with his force-senses ... truly, one was merely a more refined and powerful version of the other, but at the points they overlapped, he could see with his eyes closed. He could ... smell ... smoke. Did Ukyou forget to turn the grill off? He stepped outside of the bathroom, pulling his backpack to his shoulder, and his eyes widened. In a surprised whisper, he said, "Ukyou! Wake up!"
It took him a moment to realize he'd spoken with the force, but his senses reported her sitting up straight in alarm. "Grab some things, quickly, pack to leave," he warned, glancing through a crack in the door to the fire outside. He blinked. Then he narrowed his eyes. "This is going to be tricky," he mused, just as Ukyou stumbled down the stairs, dressed in her okonomiyaki-seller's uniform, and hauling a pack.
"That was fast," he commented.
"Got one ready for Ranchan-chasing and related emergencies," she said, smiling. Her smile faded at the glow of firelight against her door. "What's goin' on here?"
"Enemies and danger," he replied. "We've got to go -- I'm sorry, Ucchan, but I don't think I can protect you here without hurting a lot of people. Not yet."
"That's fine," Ukyou said, unlocking the back door after checking to see if it was clear through the peephole. Ranma let her leave first, worried about the very real possibility of the enraged beings in the street setting the place ablaze.... But mostly, he was uncomfortable at the dark sense of the force he felt coming from the man he'd always called his father.
"Sense it, you do," Yoda observed, as they scurried silently down the alley. "Wrongness, you have seen."
"Yeah," he said quietly. "I saw...." He struggled for a long moment, but couldn't force himself to say it. "I saw Genma," he concluded, somewhat lamely.
"That jackass?" Ukyou asked. "Hey, where are we going, anyway?"
He stopped near a lighted phone booth, and chewed his lip thoughtfully. "Good question," he admitted.
"You keep thinking, I'm calling the police," Ukyou decided, stepping into the booth.
"Wise in the ways of the world, she is," Yoda noticed. "A good tactic she has chosen. From her, lessons you may yet learn."
Ranma nodded thoughtfully. It was a pity to have to resort to what he had against Ryouga ... and that might be called for again. He didn't like the thought of it, but the knowledge of who he was protecting, and what he could use his powers for reassured him. And the knowledge that he could still triumph over them, even if not right away ... that counted for a lot.
Then Ukyou emerged from the phone booth. "Okay!" she said brightly. "Police are on their way. Now what?"
"Well," Ranma temporized....
