Lips that didn't pout, and in fact seemed more ready to compress into a thin, angry frown. A petite, button nose, somehow incongruous with those deep blue eyes.... Eyes a man could fall into, possibly spend a few weeks hiking around and getting to know. Eyes that I realized I wanted to know -- much more closely than I did.
"You're hired muscle, right?" the girl asked in annoyance, flicking some of her flaming red hair away from her face.
"I can be," I said, not rising from the desk. I was afraid to move ... this delicate creature seemed to house a terrible strength. I could sense, like the chi of another martial artist, or a rival detective ... there was something to this girl. Somehow, I got the idea that if I wasn't careful, she'd vanish like a daydream. But at the same time, it was obvious to me that she was dangerous. Was it a risk I was willing to take to get to know her a little better?
She smiled brightly.
Ah, I'm a sucker for a pretty smile, and this girl had one. As soon as she looked at me with those ruby red lips, and shone those sweet baby-blues, I was gone.
"I'll take it," I said distantly, wondering what kind of job I had agreed to.
"Good," she said, slapping an envelope on the table. "Read that."
I shrugged, and took the creased manila in my hands, opening it up and spilling the contents across the table.
I spent a moment sorting through the photographs and papers, trying to puzzle out what it meant. Then I looked up. "Is this--"
