Nodoka had been visiting friends in Osaka when the final phase of the flu came over her, and not anywhere that the Tendos knew to look for her. Soun only knew that she had gone out of town, she had not bothered to state where.

So her family, such as Genma was, was not unhand when she finally awoke to discover her change.

Nodoka is an Ace, in addition to suddenly actually knowing how to use that sword of hers, she can form much more effective energy blades.
She's a Joker, a woman of steel rather than gold like Nabiki.
She's a Duece, and has the wonderful power of being able to completely repair and perfectly sharpen any blade she touches.
as any of the above with a different set of powers and/or changes.
She has the wonderful power of being able to open up dimensional pockets on the surface of her skin in order to hold lots of things...like that sword of hers...(don't know whether this would be a Duece or an Ace)
something else...
