City Of Crossroads: Land Of Hopes And Dreams [Episode 146129]

by Kender

The city stood on a bay that was fed by two great rivers, with a sizable island between the pair. Beyond its limits were great forests and a mountain range that was almost framing the metropolis. But there were buildings of the city that were taller than any peak, as they reached kilometers into the air, as gleaming towers of steel and glass that glittered like jewels along the skyline. Along side them were structures that appeared to be built of stone, though most of those sorts of buildings would have long collapsed under their immense weights.

It was a place of oddities, just like that one. The high technology spaceport was kept far enough away from the harbors so that the boats travelling, be they sail or powered, could travel without incident. Flying machines buzzed amongst the high buildings like birds in a canyon along side people riding griffins. A red light district was tucked away from prying eyes near the port, but was still easily accessible, while there were several temples and shrines on the other side of town that would be recognizable elsewhere. One neighborhood was full of sleek buildings with electronic billboards, when another had something that looked like cobblestone streets and hanging wooden signs. Marketplaces selling everything from spices, to medicinal herbs, to magical trinkets, to knockoffs of the latest gadgets were all over the place.

And it was all due to a nameless race that had refused to name themselves, but had done amazing things for those now living on that world. They had taken people from worlds across the multiverse to be part of what was carried in their massive interstellar ark. That gigantic ship, filled to the brim with people, technologies, information, animals, and other materials from those universes had been brought by a captain and crew chosen by that alien race to this planet. This would be their new world, a place where they could live how they wanted, and could interact with all the other beings brought along with them. With all that had been brought along, they had the power to protect themselves, and the captain of the ark had made certain to use what power he'd had to help begin a stable government.

He had succeeded, and had the help of the huge and space-borne interdimensional gateways that those apparently benevolent beings had left for them. Each of those D-Portals were nigh onto impossible to destroy, and could allow a connection to another universe. However, while one could travel through a gate from this world to any other universe, the gateways that the other dimensions would have only allowed travel to that one universe where the colony was. War could have broken out, but it was entirely too massive an undertaking, and just didn't work. It was easier to just allow the colony world to be free and generally neutral, though, it was proving to be growing rather quickly.

That made for a peace that was uneasy, but was working for the time being.

So, elves talked to Vulcans. Wookies walked down the street with micronized Zentradi. Kitsune piloted mecha, both mystical and technological. Thirds, boomers, marionettes, persocoms, cyberdolls, androids, golems and other constructs worked together. All sorts of races and species were there, many because they had been brought there on the ship, but others had come of their own free will.

After all, this place was known as the 'City of New Hope'.

And amongst all these souls passing through this amazing time was:
