Having brought him to their classroom, she turned to head for her desk, and hoped that the situation would settle down some.
That didn't happen as she immediately saw Yuka's anxious face right in front of her own. "Ack! Don't do that!"
"Sorry," the other girl replied, pulling her off to a side of the classroom, where some of her other friends were waiting. "But you never said anything about an uncle!"
"I didn't know about him until yesterday. Mom didn't mention him."
"That isn't like her...."
"She probably has her reasons."
"True, but that doesn't change the fact that he is here!" Sayuri whispered fiercely.
"So?"
Her friend Asami stared at her. "You've got to be joking!"
"What's the problem?"
"The 'problem' is that you have to be blind or something. He's a hunk."
"Him?"
"Yes, 'him'," Sayuri confirmed. "He's got the sort of body girls like us wish that we could date."
"Not me. He's my uncle, remember?" Akane corrected.
"Well, you may have a way to ignore it, but us? Man... he's definitely hot."
"And nice too! I mean, he's a great martial artist, but he doesn't have the attitude of a lot of the jocks that are already here!" Yuka blurted.
"Not only the jocks. Too many of the guys here are perverts, or are perverted, you know."
"Then what do you want from me?" the youngest Tendo asked. "What do you expect me to do?"
"Tell us about him."
"Huh?"
"What sorts of girls does he like? What does he like to eat? Why does he wear those clothes instead of a uniform? What's he really like?" Asami rattled off, looking like she had more questions just waiting to be asked.
Akane held up her hands, palms facing her friends. "Come on guys. I just met him yesterday. Sure, he seems to be a nice enough guy, but it takes time to know a lot about a person."
"Well..."
"Huh?"
"Would you mind if we tried to get him for ourselves?"
"EH?!"
Yuka stared down at where she was fiddling with her fingers. "All the girls are talking about him, and a lot of us want him to ask us out...."
Looking from friend to friend, Akane saw similar expressions, and wondered just how she was supposed to handle this.
"So, tell us about your new 'uncle'," Ryonami asked as she sat perched on her chair.
Nabiki looked up from her checking of her homework and raised a brow at her friend. "What am I supposed to say?"
"Only what you now right now."
"And why should I say that?"
"Because we need to know," another friend, Kikuko, replied leaning forward, and holding a hand up to forestall any arguments. "It's because everyone is asking."
"'Everyone'?"
"'Everyone'," Ryonami agreed.
Kikuko nodded. "They think that because you're our friend, you'll tell us everything, and having nothing to tell them doesn't go over well."
"And when we say 'everyone', we mean it. The girls are all wondering about the hot new guy in school. Guys are impressed with him, and either want to be his friend, or consider him a possible alternative to Kuno."
"You can't be serious," the middle Tendo daughter muttered.
"It's the truth. They see him as someone who's not only strong, but has an attitude that's opposite to Kuno's. Because of that, he's someone they could look up to, just like Kuno would like them to do with him."
"But he's not.... The guy is totally clueless. He might be good with his fists, and cocky, but he can't even handle a little tease from a girl."
"Well then, that'll interest some of the girls."
"What? Why?"
"Think of it," Kikuko commented. "A guy who is not after your sister? And doesn't have a lot of that crap that the guys around here have?"
"We even have heard that there is interest about him from some of the upperclassman girls," Ryonami said with a shrug.
Scowling, Nabiki realized that this would mean a big shift in things, bringing up an odd protective urge, while:
