"So their intelligence is going to drop back to normal levels?" asked Sam hopefully.
"No," said Munin. "It is exactly the scenario many of them have foreseen."
Janet gasped at that. Sam frowned and continued to press. "Exactly how bad are we talking here."
"The 'quantum echo' worked fine, it is the intelligence enhancement that is the flaw," expounded Hugin. "It is that part which appears to be the doom of much of your species."
"Can you be a little more specific here?" asked Samantha Carter. It couldn't be that bad, right?
"Within a month, their intelligence levels will be back at approximately what they were before infection," further explained Hugin. "In two of your months, they'll be roughly half that level. By the third month, they should be stable again. Using your intelligence scale, I would estimate most will stabilize with scores in the fifty to seventy range."
"We're talking IQ scores here?" asked Sam, trying to get this clarified as something other than what she was hearing. "Normal scores are over one hundred?"
"Yes," said Hugin. "Most of the males at least suspect this. Many know. Most are preparing to terminate their own existence if no cure becomes available before their intellectual capacity is completely lost."
"You can fix this, right?" asked Sam, trying not to think about what this meant.
"If we could find the furlings, yes," agreed Munin. "It would be quite likely at least. As it is, we will try but it may well be that in a matter of months - the only viable males of your species will be those who were innoculated before they contracted the disease and were altered by it."
