It was, perhaps, a great pity that someone overheard that.
It was, perhaps, a greater pity that someone repeated that. The story spread through the complex at a speed only possible when teenage girls were involved.
In less than five minutes, the story had mutated from 'one of the nine bridal candidates can get the first wife slot by capturing and returning Ranma to their Bridal Suite' to 'anyone returning Ranma to that Bridal Suite gets to keep him'.
With 'boy-hungry' being a common description to the post-alteration female population of Earth, and many desperate in that regard, the reaction to such a 'bridal contest' was predictable.
Equally predictable was Ranma's reaction (hidden inside a trashcan at a nurse's station) to finding out that his parents had apparently sold him off to anyone who could catch him.
The whole problem was compounded in that the 'bridal contest' idea HAD been heard of before. Everyone knew the tale of some poor schmuck whose engagement arrangements had gotten so tangled that they'd had to have a contest to sort everything out and finally end the problem once and for all. It was a widespread urban legend often repeated by girls in slumber parties and the like.
Not having attended any slumber parties, Ranma was hearing it for the first time and his understanding of it was colored by the already existing panic he was feeling.
Hearing a startled squeak from their wastebasket, Miyuki checked it. "HE'S HERE!!!" Immediately, the nurse regretted her startled outburst, as that had pretty much taken her out of the running.
Ranma leapt free of the wastebasket, dodged the girl's attempt to grab him, leapt over the counter and noted the onrushing nurses to either side. He immediately realized that this was why his father had trained him all his life - to give him a chance to escape and survive!
See Ranma leap. See Ranma dodge. See Ranma duck. See Ranma run. Run Ranma run.
