"Hello, son. We need to talk."
Xander blinked. His father was sober and awake at ten in the morning, looked nervous and apologetic, and was calling him son. "Oh god, who died?"
"It's not that bad, Al- um, Xander," said Tony Harris. The old man was using his preferred name, instead of calling him Alexander, asshole, or 'you son of a bitch'? This would be really bad, whatever it was. "Y'know how, when I was in the Army, I was stationed in Japan for a while?"
"Yeah. Did you sell me to the Yakuza, or something?"

"Excuse me? I've been eighteen for months, and we're just hearing about this, now? And, who arranges marriages, in this day and age?"
"Um, the Japanese, I guess," said the elder Harris. "Anyway, the letter just came today, and she'll get here tomorrow morning. I think she's bringing some friends or relatives, or something, and we can ask about it then. Thing is, the Japs are real sensitive about their honour, especially family honour, so there's probably no way out of this, without someone commiting suicide, or something."
"Great. Do we at least know her name?" asked Xander.
"Um, lemme see," said his father, checking the letter. "Yeah, it's..."
