It was almost enough to make him forget the woes that had driven him into flight here. Said woes being of course two other students from his class, Evangeline, the short but deadly true blood vampire and her robot partner Chachamaru. Together they had taken him down like he was just a helpless child, preventing him from getting even one spell off as Eva had sunk her fangs into him and started to suck out his blood. If Asuna hadn't been following him last night, he had little doubt that would have been drained completely and turned into Eva's undead servant. Just remembering it sent shivers running down his back, a chill that the small crackling campfire couldn't drive away.
"Something on your mind, Negi-bouzu?"
"Ah, not really Kaede-san. It's just..."
He needed a partner, a strong partner. And he needed one fast. Evangeline had been absolutely correct about that, without someone he could trust to help him in the next clash there was no way to win against a partner team.
"Nin-nin. If there's anything I can do to help, all you need to do is ask, Sensei."
He was tempted. Oh yes, was he ever tempted. Negi had witnessed Kaede's strength on numerous occasions today. Her "I'm not a Ninja" claims ringing false after seeing her use throwing knives, multiple body clones and demonstrating a level of strength and agility that Negi's own magic enhancements could hardly keep within spitting distance of. But it wasn't right to drag his students into his own personal problems, was it?
But if Eva kept up her attacks on campus, how could he stop her? Asuna had gotten lucky last time, but what if they came after her next? And Nodoka, she'd almost fallen victim to the vampire last time, how could he protect her when he couldn't even protect himself?
His mind's eye pictured a teary eyed Nodoka and half-naked Asuna being held by Chachamaru as Eva's fangs glistened in the moonlight as she loomed over them like a dark shadow of doom.
No! He couldn't let that happen. He'd failed to protect his big sister back in Wales, he couldn't let something like that happen again to those he cared about.
"Kaede-san, would you be willing to be my partner?"
