Usagi's New Day: It Was The Last Best Hope [Episode 151314]

by Kestral

They called it "Babylon Five" and it was ultimately designed by two cats, a ten-thousand year old engineer, and a set of computer geeks. The last group was the only one that originated on Earth, and frankly the only ones that Ditae had found so far that weren't putting her own people at constant risk.

NATOid technology had begun outstripping that of the two other groups, and these others were considerably less than happy about this development. In 1982, Babylon Five was begun. It was accelerated by something that nobody had foreseen.

They called them 'New Types' in Japan. Starchildren in other countries, mutants in a few areas less positive towards them. Children was a shortening of that term. The United States and Britain both utilized the term 'Talents'.

Espers, psychics, sensitives - whatever the term was, the basic result was the development of psychic gifts by a fair number of children - mainly in the NATOid countries. Even Ditae, Luna, and Artemis were quite surprised when an ability that they had never encountered prior to this began flourishing among these NATOids.

The British called it 'Spark'. The Americans called it 'Telemechanics'. The Russians called it an unfair advantage and tried to have the use of it made illegal.

"General McGuyver? He just went to the Lunar Mining Facility. You just missed him," said the mechanic. She brushed hair out of her face, incidently leaving a smudge of grease across the bridge of her nose. "I don't think he'll be back until next Tuesday. Can I help you?"

"I was supposed to report to the General," said the young recruit, staring around her at all the activity.

"Can I see your papers?" asked the mechanic, taking off her work gloves so that she wouldn't smear said documents.

"Uh yeah," said the distracted recruit, handing them over.

"Ah," said the mechanic, reading quickly. "So. American, eh?"

"Yes, Airman Samantha Carter, Technical Division."

"Cool, be nice to work with another 'spark'," said the mechanic. "I'm Miyuki. Currently I'm with Technical but I'll end up in Security when we're operational."

"Japanese, right?" asked Carter, recognizing the name.

"Yeah. I'll show you around later, look me up at the end of the shift at 1800 hours," said Miyuki. "You can report in to Captain O'Neill over at Ops, let me show you on your map."

Carter memorized the directions as the slightly older girl pointed out the route.

"Watch out for the Chinese and Russian recruiters," warned Miyuki. "They keep trying to 'recruit' sparks."

"I've heard the horror stories," said Carter. "Any truth to them?"

"Sadly, yes," said Miyuki. "O'Neill was originally with Recovery. He comes across a lot worse than he is, at least at first. Too many times he's had to go with covert operations in trying to recover someone who went along with empty promises and ended up being part of a breeding program."

Carter shook her head, unsure of how anyone could be that gullible.

"Oh, and look out for Private Weisz. West German, blonde, fairly good looking. He hits on all the new recruits. Fairly talented with exo-suit work so they keep him around anyway."
