It had happened several generations ago. The mysterious affliction that had altered the order of the world. It had appeared with no great entrance or flash. Just a sudden decline of the birth of men. Something that many saw as a fluke. At first.
But it continued. Man were still being born, but the number of those men were getting rarer and rarer. Instead of being a fifty percent of being born male, it became a five percent chance of being born male. For every man that was born, nineteen females were born. Society had to change.
Men became valuable and important to the culture. Motions were made to protect the men that were being born. But being men, they didn't want the protection. They wanted as normal as life as possible. So women moved to protect these men in secret. Women also moved to train men to better protect themselves.
In some places women took up positions of power as they were more numerous than the men. Others had men in charge due to their rarity. Still in others power was shared. But it still brought up the numbers of conflicts that normally appeared between different political powers were still there.
Things also changed in the order of marriage. Instead of having one wife only, it became necessary for men to have many wives and lovers. So that as many children could be born as possible. Families were carefully monitored so that birth defects could be nullified. Mothers were seen as a highly respected position. Mother of male children were seen as exceptionally gifted and lucky. But it is also common for women to take lesbian lovers. Even in the families of men as the men could not make love with all their woman all of the time.
So the world changed. Not overnight, but in a slow growth to adapt to the realities. Missions were set up to increase the chances for male children. Superstition was common for encouraging or predicting male children. Wishing for a better life for the last men standing.
