To Ranma's dismay, his mother's only answer to the complicated fiancée issue was, "You just have to follow your heart Ranma!"
Apparently his disappointment in that advice was as clear as day, because Nodoka seemed to change tacts almost immediately. "Tell, me, do you actually like one of the girls, or are you just continuing this because of honor?"
Pausing for a moment, Ranma considered what would be the good answer here. Not knowing which way Nodoka was going to go, he just went with the truth. "Uhm, honor of course. Though to be honest I'm trying not to upset any of the girls or ruin their lives either."
Frowning, Nodoka had been worrying that such was the case. While she might be cheerful and optimistic, she was nowhere near blind to Ranma's life. By the same token, she'd long since realized Ranma and Akane put on acts around her. Through a little snooping of her own, she'd discovered that Akane had been forced into the engagement and in essence barely tolerated it. Nabiki had taken the engagement for a short period of time only to take advantage of him. Kasumi, despite being the eldest girl and therefore the one that should have taken the engagement, had merely sat on the sidelines and approved of the debacle.
The rest of the girls had openly used, blackmailed and otherwise played underhanded with her son. To her surprise, Ranma was the victim of their schemes instead of the girls targeting each other like she might have expected.
In the end, Ranma allowed this to happen, apparently through a combination of ignorance and a belief that he was doing the right and honorable thing by not objecting.
Now that her suspicions were fairly well confirmed through her subtle questioning and her son's blatant expressions, Nodoka was ready to put her plan into action. "Alright, then we're going to take a vacation from the mess your father made for a while. I've arranged to spend about a month with a friend of mine, and by the time we get back, our house should be finished. I don't think we can settle this mess while we're staying at the Tendou's home after all."
"Besides, the time apart might help the girls get their heads on straight, and I'd think it'd be good to spend a little time together, just us two."
