Oh My: Sometimes, Others Reap What We Sow.
[Episode 153203]
There were few things Akane Tendo was afraid of.
She was the most sought-after student on campus, yet the one who
desired the attention the least. This had led to a mean streak a
mile long, with her most willing to smack anyone down for whatever the
reason.
However, she'd gone too far this time. Hitting Kasumi was beyond
wrong; it was outright vile. Kasumi had given so much of herself
over the years to make sure the family didn't collapse after Mother's
death, and Akane hadn't even given her a moment to back away in
return. And the result lay beyond the door before her as she
stood at the door to Kasumi's hospital room.
She slowly opened the door, taking a deep breath as she saw Kasumi in
the bed, looking up, her arms and legs twitching wildly.
"Kasumi?" Akane weakly called out.
"Akane?" Kasumi responded, her voice faint.
Akane forced a smile to her lips as she walked up to Kasumi's bed and
sat down in the cheap plastic chair that was next to the bed.
"Kasumi... H-how are you...? Has the hospital staff treated you
well?"
Kasumi shook her head erratically, her glazed eyes looking for Akane as
she spoke in a soft, quivering voice. "Yes, Akane," she
replied. "They've tended to my every need sicne I woke up.
Though, I must admit, it feels strange..."
"H-how so?" Akane asked.
"Well..." Kasumi paused for a moment. "I'm just not used to it, I
suppose. As far as I can remember, I've been the one doing
everything for the family. Doing beds, cooking meals, tending to
the yard... I've always done the work, and never had anyone to turn
on... Now that I can't move at all, I'm surrounded by people who want
to help me. I'm fed, bathed... wiped..." *She blushes deeply for
a moment. "It feels strange, not being able to do anything
anymore..."
Akane flinched at her sister's words, the impact of her own rashness
stinging her soul once again. "Kasumi.... I... I just wanted to
say..."
"You're sorry?" Kasumi offered.
Akane bit her lower lip and sighed in defeat as she nodded
limply. "Yes. I... I am... I didn't think you'd push him
off..."
Kasumi gave off a soft 'hmm' noise, contemplating Akane's words.
"So," she began, her voice soft, tinged with curiosity, "would it have
been okay if Ranma was on this bed instead? Are you that obsessed
with making his life hard?"
Akane gazed wide-eyed at her sister, shaking her head in fervent
denial. "No, that's not what I meant at all!" she exclaimed, only
to bring her hands to her mouth as Kasumi groaned from the pain
resulting from Akane's loud voice. "S-sorry!" Akane said in a
hushed, desperate voice, looming over Kasumi's body as if she could do
anything.
"It's... It's all right..." Kasumi dismissed Akane's concerns
weakly. "I'll live... Though... I only wish you'd calm down...
You're a beautiful girl, but you're so angry... You've pushed everyone
away, and I'm afraid you'll end up alone..."
Akane opened her mouth to protest, but the words didn't come. She
knew her life would be the lonliest of the three Tendo daughters, and
that it would be of her own doing. All her life, she'd been
trying to push off the attentions of the boys around her, and her few
friends were even taken aback at times by how violent she could be in
trying to rid herself of those boys.
And now, she had no one. Ranma hadn't so much as looked at her in
the weeks after the incident, and the rest of her family was little
better. It was as though she had a huge sign around her neck
saying 'I'm the one who hit Kasumi,' and she bore with it the scorn
that such a crime brought with it.
"Kasumi... I'm sorry, I really am..." Akane pleaded pathetically, the
tears running down her cheeks. "Please... Let me try to help
you... I'll do anything it takes if it'll help make your life easier..."
Kasumi seemed to be considering Akane's offer carefully, weighing the
pros and cons of accepting help from the sister who'd made a cripple of
her.
-
"I think," Kasumi said, "I'd like that. Thank you, Akane."
-
"No," Kasumi told her sister coldly. "You've done enough, thank you."
-
"Get away from her," Ranma growled threateningly from the doorway.
-
"Maybe this will help you learn something," their father said from the doorway. "There are things in life only fate itself can teach, Akane. I hope you've learned from this."
-
Ranma and his father have a long talk about the former's plans, the pursuit of a cure, of the Art, of anything really, having become insignificant.
-
Others.
