That did not mean they were slouches and the odd talents were developing in ways that confused the three ambassadors. Artemis was the first to adapt, and had gotten himself onto the committee for designing uniforms for the station. That Artemis was slightly ecchi was ignored. After all - he was a talking cat.
Luna found herself grumbling about all this but gradually adapted. Ditae just communicated via hologram, and was spending a lot of time in a light trance to conserve resources on the ship.
Babylon Five was denounced by some as a waste of time and money and resources.
Everyone else ignored the 'doom and gloom brigade' and simply saw some part of the project which they could be enthusiastic about. Parents pointed out the large star visible at night to their children. Young schoolkids dreamed of working in the harshest environment known to man, pushing back the limits of science, and exploring strange new worlds. Adults, even those locked in the nine-to-five wage-slave lifestyle, could glance up at the bright point and dream.
It was into this environment that those with the spark were coming.
"Airman Samantha Carter," said the short-haired blonde.
"Right, Carter. This is your bunk, that's your locker, there's your space suit."
"Who designed this thing?" Samantha demanded.
"A little white cat named Artemis," answered her bunkmate. "You've seen the newcasts. Am I forgetting anything?"
"Well," said Carter, frowning slightly as she looked at the spacesuit, "you could tell me your name."
"Oh, right," said the girl. "Sorry, the station goes operational in a month so everyone's working double-shifts. My name is-"
