There were undead and monsters and evil things which preyed on human flesh.
There were those who bumped back and those for whom such things were not the predator but the prey.
Killing monsters borne of the mists was difficult, requiring special weapons and tactics. Someone in the German fortress had come up with the idea that as demon could kill demon, that using parts of defeated demons could make a weapon to kill demons.
It was Fort Himeji which first started training Demonslayers, with the result that those who chose that profession went from Fortress to Fortress to learn all the latest techniques and tricks.
Demonslayer, Monster Hunter, there were a half dozen terms for it but it all came down to this sort of figure. Everyone had their signature weapon, a backup, and as many tricks as they could work out.
The young man wore Chinese-looking clothing and had a pair of leather bracers with glittering metal studs. Tallman figured the studs were silver-plated, some of the Things had an aversion to the metal.
Of course, Joshua Tallman wasn't exactly an idiot or he wouldn't have survived in his position. He also noted the gun on Ranma's hip, useful for fighting off bandits. He also knew that the Demonslayer had a regular boot-knife on his right calf-length mocassin and probably had a dozen other anti-fiend weapons in the "duster" style coat he was wearing.
The boy's weapon would indicate something about his fighting style - and it was a long spear-like weapon. The crosspiece looked like it was formed of two long fangs while the long center blade was a slightly different shade. At the point where crosspiece met blade met shaft was something red and vaguely spherical. A crystallized eye, maybe?
Tallman had seen a few others come through. Each Demonslayer's weapon looked different. Some were missile weapons, meant to be used at a distance. Others were melee weapons for the up close and personal approach. A spear could be used at a distance or in melee.
Ranma walked out, ignoring the scrutiny. It wasn't like being stared at was unfamiliar. All Demonslayers got it, and his own story had come out sometime in the past few years which only increased this factor. He had washed up, apparently coming from the fog of the Impact.
"Boss?" asked the bartender.
"Get someone to work on the buggy," said Tallman. "It's necessary to keep deals with that sort, and they have to keep their deals. Otherwise we'd be in big trouble next time something happens."
"Ain't that," said the bartender. "There's something I heard you should know -"
