But what Maxil D’raal was wasn’t nearly as interesting as who he was, because he hadn’t gone by the name of his birth for more than 20,000 years. Instead, he was known to humans as Gerald Stewart—an upstart gaijin businessman who’d managed to take his fledgling Tokyo-based credit card company and, in the space of two years, turn it into one of the most powerful financial institutions in Eastern Asia, if not the world. However, he had another identity—one which was currently only known to the supernatural creatures who served him. He was Anthracite, a man who’d forsaken his best friend millennia ago to join a movement that he thought would change what he saw as serious flaws in the world’s social structure. And right now it was Anthracite who was poring over the report he had received the previous night from one of his ninjamarketer squads in the office of Gerald Stewart.
He hadn’t slept all night, but it was no matter—he knew several spells that were a thousand times better than caffeine, but didn’t have any of the addictive qualities. The possibility of gaining energy silos to store his excess magical energy until he needed it (and allowing him to escape the notice of the Senshi) was just too good to pass up, so he’d spent all night modifying his plans to accommodate this new variable.
Anthracite let out a sigh of satisfaction—his revised plans were finished, and he was very happy with them. He looked at his calendar again. It was Sunday—perfect. Today was “Gerald Stewart’s” day off, so he could get away from his office. He wasn’t going home, of course; today, he would recruit his first silo—who would hopefully be the first of many such silos. Now he had only one decision left to make—who would be the first?
He pondered this for a while, glancing over the readouts on each of the candidates once again, trying to decide who would be the best choice. He had plans to ensnare each one of course, but some would be easier once he had conscripted others. Finally, he made his choice, and with a smirk, left his office to pursue his first “recruit”:
