Ark: Doctor, Do No Harm.... [Episode 157448]

by Kender

Hawkeye considered what he'd learned, and knew that there was a chance here to do something to keep things from screwing up again. He'd always known that people could be terribly stupid, and that they tended to make all sorts of mistakes that a blind man could avoid. If he took this chance, he could make it so that this time humanity wouldn't destroy itself through its own stupidity. Plus, he could make things into the way that he'd always imagined they could be, and have a world that was happy, safe, and a lot of fun.

And then he dismissed the entire concept. It just seemed to be so absurd that he, who had never had much respect for authority and the ones that pushed it onto others, would do something to take command of other people's lives. Sure, he could do a lot, but at the end of the day, he wouldn't like himself, and had no guarantees that it would work. This place itself had examples of the variety of things that could happen, which pointed out that even if he got rid of one thing, like war, humanity could just be destroyed by something else, like disease.

Sighing to himself, he turned to look up at the kid and gave a wry smile. "(Okay kid, your turn.)"

"(Huh?)" went the teenager.

"(We need to get you fixed up, and the sooner that we do it, the better.)"

"(Ya'll get no complaints from me.)"

"(Good. You should always listen to your doctor. Unless he's a pompous ass, and then you should treat him as that calls for.)"

"(You know a doctor like that?)"

"(Oh, yeah,)" Hawkeye confirmed. "(Remind me to tell you about him later.)"

"(Umm.... Okay....)"

"(Well then, let's get going.)"

The teenager nodded, and the two of them hurried over to the 'automed', which turned out to be a bed in a metal room. Neither of them could understand what it could do, and could see that as they looked at each other that they were both having the same doubts. But this was the best way that they were going to be able to do the work, and so the kid headed in to lay down. As soon as he did, the room closed up, a bright light flared up, and a mask slid down to cover his mouth and nose. A cuff with tubes coming out of it slid onto his arm and tightened, clearly pumping something into his body as he fell asleep, and the place to be operated on was cleaned.

Then the machinery with their lasers, blades, and other equipment extending towards him.

All through this, Hawkeye watched, and kept his eye on the information that was being sent to him. He found that he could basically follow what was going on, as the science wasn't too far away from what he knew. It was still amazing stuff, and he did have to admit that it was fascinating how every movement was precise, controlled, and aimed to not do any more harm than as absolutely necessary to do the job, though he still didn't like the artificial nature of it all.

But he had to admit that it was a definitely good thing for the kid that they'd done this so quickly, given the signs of what he was seeing when the machinery got down to the cancer.

All in all, the procedure didn't seem to take all that long, as he could tell that many surgeons would have had a much harder time with it. This took a relatively short amount of time, and as he watched, he did have to admit that it seemed to have care and concern programmed into it, given how it was careful to be as gentle as possible right down to the end, where it put every after surgical care item that he could think of into play, and a few that he didn't even know about.

Still, it looked like Ranma was going to be put onto the road to recovery, and so he let the kid rest. Even with the best doctors on the case, it was always a good idea to do that, and if he wanted nothing else as a doctor, he wanted to give his patients the best care that he could. Since there didn't seem to be any emergencies brewing, he let the boy sleep, and headed off for a small stroll.

After all, this was just another symbol of the strange detour that events had taken, and he needed to figure out how to handle it while:
