"We are grateful for his lordship's generosity in allowing us to make use of this world's Stargate facility." Retief bowed as he spoke. He kept his voice clear and strong enough to carry the fifteen feet to the raised section of the room where the Daimyo sat on a collection of pillows.
"You are new to this land," the courtier sitting a foot away facing him responded. "If this was your world, you would know well the tales of our lord's generosity."
"Very true," Retief agreed. "At the same time, it would shame us to rely on anothers generosity without offering anything in return. Likewise, I expect that both our peoples have come to relish the reassurance of a formal treaty, to avoid misunderstandings." He raised a hand to rest on a manila folder on the table between him and courtier. "Hence we wish to put an initial offering on the table for discussion."
The courtier bowed. "Our lord deeply wishes to avoid you any shame or uncertainty," he said as he took the folder and passed it to a servant. "Your offer will be carefully examined, and a response given you to bring back to your own lords."
Retief bowed in response. "I thank his lordship for this consideration. And I have one other thing of great relevance." Retief reached forward to touch the envelope that now was the only thing on the table.
The courtier glanced back at the Daimyo. The Daimyo nodded, snapping his fan halfway open. "What is this surprising revelation?"
Retief reached his hands forward, opened the envelope, and pulled out the papers within. Placing them over the envelope, he leaned back, folding his hands together. "Your aid with the Stargate has allowed us to contact comrades we could not contact otherwise. And they bring news of a terrible enemy, one who threatens all human life everywhere." Retief paused. "Our peoples wish to come together in a meeting to learn about this enemy, and the possible gains from confronting it. This meeting will be held in two days, and we hope for the presence of your representative, and a representative hidden by the leaves to attend as well."
The courtier made a disapproving 'tsk' sound. "Two days is a very short time."
"My superiors completely agree with the sentiment, however it seems we made contact with the Pegasus Galaxy at a moment when time is running short."
The courtier looked back at the Daimyo, then bowed low as he saw him rise to his feet and walk to the edge of the raised platform.
Retief also bowed at the Daimyo's approach, raising his head as he heard the Lord of the Fire Country speak for the first time. "Retief-san, what is this, Pegasus Galaxy you speak of?"
"You want me to talk at a summit meeting?"
"You are the head of our research team, Rodney," Dr. Weir replied.
"Look, normally I'd have no problems hob-nobbing with the big shots, but there are three Wraith hive ships en-route, and I'm trying to figure out some way of stopping them."
Dr. Weir nodded. "Everyone realizes that, however since the summit in question will be here in Atlantis, you'll be able to bring everyone up to date on your progress in deciphering the cities secrets without taking too much time out of your schedule."
Dr. McKay, paused, looking around momentarily. "They're coming here?"
Dr. Weir nodded. "Not for very long, just a quick tour and a briefing on the Wraith."
General O'Neill looked across the table at Master Bra'tac. His eyes moved to look at second Jaffa. "Come again?"
Bra'tac leaned forward. "What Saurak means is that even before this . . . summit, the Free Jaffa nation wishes to offer troops to aid the Tau'ri in defending the city of the Ancients. The Tau'ri share much of the credit for the end of our enslavement." General O'Neill raised a hand. "Don't sell yourselves short, you did plenty too." He dropped his hand and paused a moment. "Now, we're certainly glad to get the offer, but . . ."
Bra'tac straightened. "Do you doubt the courage of the Jaffa?"
"Never!" Jack responded instantly. "What I'm questioning is how well we can integrate our chains of command."
Bra'tac nodded. "A valid concern. Resolving such concerns is one of the reasons we came to you."
Jack angled his head. "One of?"
"There is another concern, one we do not need your approval to begin," Saurak stated in a semi-challenging tone.
Bra'tac raised his hand toward the other Jaffa. "We could pursue it ourselves, but cooperation would benefit us both far more." He turned toward Jack. "Among the planets now administered by the Free Jaffa nation, we have found a sparsely inhabited planet with the special Chappa'ai capable of contacting other universes."
"And?"
Saurak leaned forward. "It is our intention to organize Jaffa teams to explore these new worlds as well."
Jack looked from one Jaffa to the other. "Oh."
Bra'tac nodded. "The Jaffa have won our freedom, but there is still much to learn about being free. Traveling to other universes, exploring such possibilities without the iron hand of a false god . . ."
Jack tilted his head. "Did wonders for Teal'c."
Bra'tac nodded. "Indeed."
"And the group is now complete." Colonel Chekov commented as he turned away from General O'Neill.
Jack glanced at his watch. "I don't think they'll mind if we start half a minute early." he turned toward the window to the control room. "Walter, Dial-er up!"
Walter activated the sequence, and the Stargates middle ring began to rotate. "Chevron one encoded."
He turned to the assembled group of diplomats and military personnel. "I know this mini-summit came out of nowhere, but things are very serious in the Pegasus galaxy."
"Cheveron two encoded."
Jack took a step toward the door, then halted and turned back, pulling out a letter.
"Cheveron three encoded."
"Ah there's one more last minute surprise." Jack called out to the diplomats as he opened the letter.
"Cheveron four encoded."
Jack took the letter from the envelope, and took a moment to dramatically adjust it's positioning from his eyes.
"Chevron five encoded."
"The Daimyo of the Fire Country cordially invites you --" Jack began.
"Chevron six encoded."
Jack continued, "to conclude your meeting with a visit--"
"Chevron seven encoded."
"to one of the Fire Country's finest hot spring resorts,--"
"Chevron eight encoded."
"as a way of concluding things on a relaxing note."
"Chevron nine is locked."
