She was telepathic, at least with regards to animals, and with them she had something of a high capability. (hence the reason she was so easily able to call up a host of cats on the one time she tried to cure Ranma's ailurophobia). And could, at the very least, understand the mechanics of others with more traditional forms of telepaths. (And she considering tinkering with her power to see if she could stretch the limits past animals...she had had a good ability to guess which animal or mythos-simulation would scare some one the most in the past...). Not to mention that, as Xavier had said, the meditative techniques she had trained herself in to control her powers had given her very impressive mental defenses and an a clarity and ability to observe a situation without panicking or losing control of her emotions that rivalled Ranma's Soul of Ice.
She had a power that depended a great deal on a high amount of imagination and quickness of thought. There were other shapeshifters out there. Few if any had found the capability to change to such a degree as Kasumi, who had been everything from mice to creatures that appeared to mythological creatures (she'd managed a good sized dragon once, basically a very large anaconda with a lion's head and four eagle-like talons along the body, but it had none of the esoteric abilities, and it had been quite tiring to maintain).
In addition, she was well used to the application of physical force and really had developed something of a unique form of martial arts to be used with her shapeshifting abilities. She even had five or six years of Anything Goes training (which she had recalled after much difficulty soon after her powers awakened) to fall back on.
So, after being exposed to her house-wife act for nearly an hour of rather interesting cooking lessons (Though Ranma was beginning to fear that Nabiki shared Akane's ability in the kitchen.) they were somewhat unprepared to see Tendo-Sensei appear as...
