Japan had been perfectly content to shut out foreign magic and trade, the influx of competing cultures and ideas, the foreign faith (ignoring that Buddhism was not native either) and other "unJapanese" things.

The world had mostly just shrugged and gone on past this island without much in the way of natural resources. The Spanish had started something else by showing off their advances to create the Isabella and others had followed suit - it becoming something of national pride to develop these artificial port-islands during this period. Still, the Dutch had maintained a base at Japan for a time and something curious had occurred during that time.

Japanese who left the island nation were not allowed back. Some left anyway. Either they were of a persecuted faith, fleeing the law, facing political exile, or for other reasons, a tiny amount of Japanese made their way out into the world. There was one other reason for some, particularly one individual who left in 1835.

Subaru Miyazaki, a ronin whose lord had perished in one of the duels that periodically occurred within the ranks of the daimyo, pursued a dream. He sought the sky.

In 1842 Subaru Miyazaki was involved in the Afghan-Anglo Wars, working as a courier and apprentice pilot for the British as they tried to keep Russia from annexing Afghan and India. He was one of the survivors of Akbar Khan's slaughter of the British forces there, and went on to become a pilot with the international mercenary group War Wizards in 1849. It hadn't been until 1843 though that word of his native land becoming occupied by the Chinese Empire became known to him, and during that time he'd begun forming a network of contacts and allies.

One man can make a difference. Timing, luck, and good planning can amplify the power of one man to make that one voice among many count beyond simple numbers.

Subaru Miyazaki was forty-six when he, his British wife Pamela, and his son Samuel began the process of gathering together the various scattered Japanese forces and their allies in opposition to the Chinese.
