Macross/Babylon: Launch [Episode 160834]

by Disruptor

Rick Hunter looked out the viewing port of the SDF-1 and shook his head. He thought back to the first time he saw the ship in person and gave an amused chuckle.

"Well Roy, you won that argument of ours. If only you could see me now," Rick said.

"Rick?" A voice came from behind him.

Turing around Rick saw his recently married wife Lisa. He motioned for her to come stand beside him

"I was just thinking out loud of an argument that Roy and I got into before the Macross launched. I thought Roy was being an idiot for joining the military and fighting and he said that I was too young to understand. I do now and look where I'm at," Rick explained softly.

Lisa hugged Rick and smiled. "Let me guess, you would be flying in that airshow of your father's if the war hadn't happened?"

"Probably. I love flying. I've got some engineers working on a civilian model Valkyrie, just so I could go out flying and not look like I'm ready for a fight," Rick said. "Admiral Gloval laughed at that and told me that I was to send any and all information back to UN Spacy on that Valkyrie design. He said something about keeping the need of roads down to a minimum."

Lisa laughed. "That's going to be interesting. We have civilian vehicles flying from one population center to another and the area between the population centers is wilderness or farmland."

Rick looked at a clock on the wall and sighed. "I think you had better get to your station Captain, we have ten minutes before the rest of the crew gets here."

"Aye aye, Commodore," Lisa said with a mock salute.

The preparations for the launch of the three SDF ships went smoothly. A number of former citizens of Macross City looked towards the sky remembering what happened a few years ago. Their fears were not met and the three ships launched from their respective positions and headed for space. They were soon past the gravitational well of earth and on the other side of the moon. Lt. Sammy looked at a reading from one of the scanners.

"Commodore? I've picked up some kind of energy reading on the moon. It looks like some kind of ship."

"Put it on screen."

The viewscreen blipped and an image of the moon's surface appeared. Apparently during the Rain of Fire, some excess energy had moved some of the moon's surface and revealed a black ship that was buried on the moon.

"I wonder how long that's been there," Rick muttered. "Status on it."

"The ship seems to be in a standby mode. Preliminary readings show it to be on the same level as one of the new Garfish," Sammy replied.

"Send the information to Admiral Gloval and see what he wants done with it," Rick said.

"Aye sir," Sammy replied and started working with the hyperpulse radio.

Vanessa and Kim whispered to each other speculating about the ship. Rick stared at the buried ship and for some reason spiders came to mind.

"Commodore, Admiral Gloval says continue with the mission. He's sending Dr. Lang and his crew to deal with that ship," Sammy said.

"Very good. Hail Distant Fire and Freedom," Rick stated. "All ships, prepare for space fold."

On Earth, a young woman looked up at the sky and had a tear fall down her cheek. After seeing a flash of light near the moon, she sniffed and started walking towards a refurbished building that she was using as her home.

"Good-bye Rick," Lynn Minmei whispered.

Minmei flipped through a stack of music media and frowned.

'I told Kyle that I was only going to sing for myself, but I'm getting tired of being the only singer having concerts. Starhope Music,' Minmei thought. 'I'll give others the chance that the Macross gave me.'
