“Why should we do this, again?” asked Ranma. The prospects of their impending adventure seemed worse than the alternative.
“Because it’s better than the alternative, which for you two happens to be a bottomless pit of screaming death and pain.”
“Right,” Ryoga turned back to the vortex. “Well, here goes,” He said, jumping in with more than a little fear about him.
Ranma turned back at the vortex and then back to the man. The man waved, and Ranma jumped backwards, into the vortex.
“There they go,” The man said. The winds slowly died down as the vortex slowly collapsed in on itself, sealing the fate of the two boys. When it was finally there, the man stood alone. “They were the best candidates for our replacements,” He said. A girl walked stepped forward and frowned at him.
“Stop acting so grouchy,” She said. “You’ve held that position forever. It’s high time you gave it up,” She spat.
The man chuckled. “I suppose you’re just as comfortable losing yours?” He asked.
“No, but I could use a vacation. If they’re incompetent we’ll have nothing to worry about,” She said indifferently.
“Haha…Of course,”
The night was lit with the light of a full moon. A swirling vortex opened up and two teenaged boys came falling out of it. Ryoga growled angrily as he impacted the dirt. Ranma’s landing was much softer, and the boy only grunted as he impacted the ground. The swirling vortex behind them closed up and they both stood up, dusting themselves off.
“Recognize this area?” he asked loudly.
“Maybe,” Ryoga said as he started walking forward. “There’s only one way to find out,” He continued. “I hope this one has modern conveniences,” he muttered. “What I’d do for a proper shower,”
“Yeah, haven’t had one in ages,” He commented. “Hold up, pig boy,” He said suddenly.
“What is it?” The Eternally lost boy asked irritably.
"We're not alone,"
Ryoga blinked and felt the area with his chi senses. Around him he could feel someone watching them. It was only one person, and they both looked up. The person that was watching them wasn't there, but they still had a feeling that eyes were looking at them from that direction.
"What the hell..?"
Ranma shook his head and shrugged. "Well, whatever it is we're supposed to do here before we move on to the next world..."
"We just got here...how could anyone know we're here?" Ryoga found himself asking. Both boys shrugged and continued walking through the dense vegetation that seperated them and... whatever else. "They said there could be all kinds of variants to this world. The main people might not even be humans," He said warningly.
"I don't think they'd start us off with something so different," Ryoga said.
They both continued for a moment when they found themselves surrounded by a vast city. They looked around and noticed everything.
"Well I guess you're right. It's Tokyo, and everyone is human," Ranma admitted. "We're probably in a park or something...What are we supposed to do anyway?"
Ryoga frowned at his new "Partner". "We're supposed to help people. And not just everyday people, but people like..." Ryoga tried to think of a good example.
"People like her?" Ranma asked, pointed at a strange blonde girl dressed in a sailor fuku fighting a strange creature.
