As he said afterwards, the problem wasn't that she didn't love him, not really - it was that her life was a bloody mess.
"...Alright, so she's going to live there, now?"
"That's the plan, Jason. She'll work in the cafeteria, and the job comes with food, board and working clothes. The salary isn't much, but it's not like she's going to need it to pay for rent or food, after all...And it does come with a medical and pension plan."
"...And when she goes on a bender?"
When, not if. Bruce sighed. Jason was in touch with the reality of his mother's life, if nothing else...
"Then we'll get her un-bendered again. Don't worry, Jason."
Dick Greyson had decided to go to Bludhaven U despite Alfred's silent disapproval - Bruce sometimes wondered if Alfred was capable of not disapproving of anything, anymore - and had moved to the BU dorms. The mansion seemed strangely silent without him, Bruce thought.
According to the harried tutors, Jason's schoolastic abilities were improving, if at the pace of a snail. A very slow snail.
Bruce sighed. Maybe homeschooling was the best option, for Jason at least...
Or maybe...
Hmmmm. One of the people working for his community education improvement project had said something that had stuck in his mind, somehow.
What had that been, again...
"...We're making a school of our very own, now?"
"Not just a school, schools. Lots of them! From kindergarden to university, and various business schools in the bargain, too - Eventually, of course. For now, it's just a high school."
Dick snorted, and laughed.
"...Sounds like a plan. It's easier to do things with the education system if we're actually running the things, is it?"
"Something like that."
Dick grinned.
Alfred, sadly enough, did not.
Bruce sighed.
And it had been difficult enough to push through such a long name for a high school, too...
The Thomas and Martha Wayne High School, for everyone, special needs or not.
Slightly less then an year later, Bruce Wayne was looking at a young man. Boy, rather.
The boy looked back.
"...Alfred?"
"This is Master Timothy Drake, that I wrote to you about, Master Bruce."
Yes, yes, I know that, Alfred.
Jason rolled his eyes.
Dick, who'd come home for the weekend, nearly laughed himself silly.
