Basically, the young man, after arranging things with his girlfriend (and, sometimes, her parents), goes over to he house and climbs in through her window after the family has gone to bed, so that the two of them may commit lewd and licentious acts together. So long as he leaves before sunrise, he technically did not spend the night, and thus hasn't done anything to be ashamed of.
