They still could hear the bell tones of the Sacrifice, singing across fractured Realities.
They didn't think they would ever stop.
Lady Une looked at Chang Wufei across the desk.
Wufei looked back.
Neither of them had very much left to say to each other. At all.
"That...bitch...refused. Refused to take my life."
"...Yes."
"I was the only one - that was possible. With Miss Perfect Relena Darlian Peacecraft. She. She - I, I wasn't even much of a proxy, but - "
"Yes, I know."
Wufei closed his eyes, then. Even his camarades in arms would have shied away from his expression, that moment.
There was nothing human left in it at all.
"...Give me a list of candidates. Any candidates. Mere potentials will do."
"...Yes."
The night was colder then the icy winds.
"How long do we have?"
"...The weave will hold for a year. Probably."
And even that was something near a miracle.
"And then..."
"We will begin to. Split apart."
Who ties the various versions of Realities together?
Who keeps the Monsters half-way sane?
Who keeps the Monsters from eating the World and the people from eating the Monsters?
The Monster Monarch, that's who.
Who was dead. And gone.
They needed a replacement. Desperately.
And Relena Darlian Peacecraft had refused to kill Une... - who hadn't been much of a Proxy, to be sure, but damn the bitch to the netherhells, anyway.
And now they were lacking a Monster Monarch.
The Monster King was dead. Long live the Monster King. Or Queen.
Whoever it was going to be.

Brown-haired, brown-eyed, very unnoticable. Yes, he knew. The world knew him as one of Treize Khushrenada's countless almost faceless minions, if they noticed him at all.
"- The real Treize Khushrenada - never came back from the Dillssa conflict."
Well, all right. It wasn't like he didn't know that the Treize he'd known was a Melody, after all...

Wufei started out, armed only with a list of names, which Une had promised to update.
