The Mad 5 - the moniker had been given by somebody long gone, but it had somehow stuck - clustered before various kinds of communication equipment, of the more or less illegal variety.
Doctor J, Professor G, Doktor S, Instructor H and Master 0. That is what they were called now. Though Howard the Engineer was still, thankfully, just Howard.
There had been others, but not any more.
It was time.
"J, J, can you hear me..."
It was good to hear from the others again, the man only known as Doctor J now thought.
And even better to hear that their plans were actually managing to go forward instead of backward, for a change...
"So we all have our Suits on-line, and the Pilots are shaping up nicely. ...Well, most of us, that is."
Doktor S gave an apologetic cough, at that.
"Well, there's always the option of actually going through with Trowa Barton, but..."
"Oh, please, no. Not Dekim's son, damnit..."
"Yes, yes, I'd rather not either, but...well, actually, there is somebody I've been keeping my eyes on..."
" - Oh, really?"
Several of the scientists coughed.
"Show us, show us..."
Alright, then.
Doctor J rubbed his hands together. This was going to be...fun.
A few minutes later, a very loud silence was filling the ether.
"...What. The. Helll??"
Almost a year later after a group session via very illegal com devices, a elderly man was looking at the stars.
It was time.
**Someplace around the L2 Cluster**
"So you're good and ready to 'jack your Gundam, girl?"
"Hijack the Gundam, haa. I mean, a mere Gundamjacking sort of pales to what you're trying to do - You and y'friends are try'n to hijack the Meteor Plan entire!"
"So we are, girl. ...You don't disapprove, I hope?"
The girl shook her honeybwown hair, and laughed.
"No, of course not - Doin' something that's likely to trash the entire Earth's ecosystem just to get back at the Alliance? Talk about overkill, baaaah. - Side's, I was born Earthside. I think, anyway..."
"Alright, then."
The old man smiled.
"From this time on, your codename is "Madlax". - Havoc to your enemies, Madeline Maxwell."
**Someplace in the L3 Cluster**
" - So."
"Yes, so. - It is time."
The young woman sighed. Well, the dice had been cast a long time ago.
Now, it was time to reap the whirlwind.
"You will fight, for the Colonies? Or even just against the Alliance?"
" - Come now. I did volunteer for this, you know."
Even if it was because she'd figured out - pretty accurately, , she thought even now - that not volunteering her services after she'd seen Doktor S's assistant shoot down Dekim Barton's son was even more risky then volunteering...
The young blonde woman sighed, shaking her head.
And it's not like she didn't have an inkling about what she was really getting into. She was a merc of a sort, and had been one for a long time, after all.
And let's just say that she and the Alliance had no love lost between each other. Stupid bloody oppressive morons.
"Yeah, I'm ready."
"Very well then, Pilot. Your codename is - "
A blast shook the base, then, but she could hear him just fine.
"Good luck, Mireille Bouquet. We wish you well."
**Someplace in the L4 Cluster**
"...Your family is quite likely to be mad at me beyond reason, lady. - And certain servants of yours are quite likely to tear me apart alive, if they could catch me..."
The dark-haired young girl smiled at him, sadly.
"And Uncle Abdul - Mr Winner wouldn't like L4 being implicated in all this at all, either. He - I wish I could get the "heat" off him, Instructor... He's been kind to me, even though I'm just barely related to him. - But still."
The girl sighed, then.
"But still, this has to be done. That's what I truly believe, Instructor. I'll - I'll talk to Elenore later, if you wish."
"Please do so, lady. I'd rather not be tortured to death by your maid, if possible..."
The old man and the girl looked at each other, then.
It was time.
"Your codename from this point on is "Book".
"..."Book". Very well."
"...Good luck, Lady Margaret Barton. - You'd need it."
**Someplace in the L5 Cluster**
The bald man boosted the girl into her Gundam, silently.
Small...she was so small, still. And her hair, so white...
She looked at him. Smiling sadly.
"One day I'll be bigger, Master O. If I live."
And will you always read my mind?
"Your codename is "Mirror". - Good luck, Leticia."
**Someplace in the L1 Cluster**
"If you were a boy..."
The old man sighed, then.
"If you were male, your codename would have been "Heero Yuy". As it is..."
The girl looked at him, silently.
"Your usename is "Yuumura Kirika", and your codename is "Noir"."
The girl simply nodded at that.
"Mission accepted."
"...Wind to thy wings, girl..."
The whisper floated in the air...
