"So you're saying that your life is weird and ya can't get a normal boyfriend, and yer only other friend is a girl from 1000 years in the future who don't show up too often," said Ranma, summing up what Hotaru had said without all the hesitations, blushing, stammering, and bashfulness. In truth, he was just guessing that this girl had a condition called 'shy' that he'd heard about but never seen any evidence of.
Hotaru nodded, blushing and twiddling her fingers.
"You're also sayin'," said Ranma, "that ya really want a friend, ya got some problems with bullies and can't make no friends at school, and people get weirded out cause of somethin' you can do that they can't?"
Hotaru nodded again.
"Okay, well I got enough problems with fiancees and stuff I never asked for," said Ranma. "So how's about we be friends?"
Hotaru was a little disappointed, but reminded herself this was just her first attempt and she HAD originally been after a friend. So a boy who was a friend was at least a step in the right direction, right?
"Unnn," said Hotaru, holding up one hand with the pinky out.
"What's that about?" asked Ranma.
"Pinky-swearing to be friends," said Hotaru seriously. "You don't know about that?"
Ranma stopped and thought about it. Talk about time-traveling friends and weird powers to the side, this was about as normal a girl as he was likely to meet. What did he know about NORMAL friends? Since the closest friends he had were martial arts okonomiyaki chefs-turned-fiancees and "RANMA PREPARE TO DIE!" yelling rivals, what did he know about normal? "Okay."
As the two shook hands on it -
