Shinji's new day: Genre Robo [Episode 166653]

by Kender

Some things were still the same, so Shinji was sure that he had a good idea of what was coming next. He was already walking with a pair of women, one who was a captain in a secret paramilitary force, and another who was that same force's research director. They might have been younger than he had expected, and NERV was fighting demons now, but he knew that some things were going in the same direction as he'd remembered them.

That was especially true when he came into a room that was totally dark.

Well, it didn't go quite how he remembered it, considering the fact that he got a little lost in the dark. Doing so allowed him to walk into something. Unfortunately for his personal dignity, that 'something' was alive.

"Oof!" he grunted when he walked into something soft and shapely that gave off a feminine counterpart to that noise.

There was the sound of amusement in Ritsuko's voice when she spoke. "Being a little forward there, aren't we?"

"Is that what you call it?" Misato muttered.

"Sorry!" he yelped, uncertain of which woman he'd bumped in to. But he wasn't about to take any chances, and hurried back to stand on his own. "It's kind of dark, you know...."

"There is that...."

"Well, maybe this will help," the scientist commented, with the lights going on as soon as she spoke.

Shinji's eyes widened as he saw the main thing to see in the room. But it wasn't due to any surprise at seeing Unit 01 there, as he'd expected it to be around. However, this was not the same machine that he remembered. Sure, it was still mainly purple, had a sleek look with a single 'horn' on its head, and looked to be built for speed, but there some really big differences.

First off, the 'face' looked a whole lot more like a face this time, with a chin and nose even added. Then there was the fact that it was built to stand straighter, as the structure didn't have that natural curve to it. And the armor was clearly metallic, with the shiny look to it clearly making it look more solid.

Instead of the old 'nasty runner' look, it appeared to be more like an armored 'paladin', or something similar.

In fact, it reminded him of stuff that he'd seen on television as a kid. "Giant.... robot...."

"You won't find this in your manual," Ritsuko told him. "This is mankind's greatest fighting weapon, the multipurpose humanoid combat machine, Evangelion, Unit 01."

"That's supposed to fight the demons."

"You figured it out?"

"Giant robot? Giant monsters? It's kind of natural...."

"True."

"And it's my father's work."

"It is," commented a familiar voice, and the three of them looked up to a nearby balcony.

As Shinji expected, he saw his father, who looked fairly commanding up there. But, for some reason, he didn't look so... so... nasty this time. To tell the truth, it was almost like the man didn't have the same sort of need to use shadows as weapons any more.

Not that he was about to start liking the man because of that. He wasn't too sure what to make of it, while:
