Ranma's New Life: The Arms Race That Wasn't (1912-1914) [Episode 166711]

He didn't want to participate in an arms race, however he was not being given much choice in the matter. With Austro-Hungary using steam-driven giant robots, with the new petrochemical fuel formulations making higher performance engines possible - things were bound to get bad fast.

Tesla considered several things, including projects he'd abandoned regarding broadcast power. Finally he came up with the one he thought least likely to be more problem than anything else simply because they could NOT be duplicated except slowly through normal biological processes.

He gave pairs of them away. To politicians. To celebrities who hadn't been terribly nasty towards him. To breeding farms as a new product where he contracted for part of the profits. Something that, if the likely-seeming war DID break out, might have uses both off and on the battlefield.

Originally he called them 'Tesla Pets'.

The press called them monsters at first, then when it turned out they were going to be incredibly popular - called them pocket monsters. It was due to a shortage of space for the headline that the term got shortened to pokemon - but that ended up being the name that stuck.

One of Tesla's Inner Circle, Cecilia Armstrong, had been the one to convince Tesla that this might not be a bad idea to back. She had gotten busy with the promotion of these and ended up devoting full time to their use. Firefighters using animals who used 'water conjury' to douse forest fires as a single example.

When the 'conjury' abilities were being pointed to as evidence that these were evil, Tesla said that was completely wrong and trotted out the math himself. Four people worldwide were able to follow it, including a fellow named Albert Einstein. (Who himself had a lot of problems with the math itself, but wasn't inclined to assign demonic origins to these creatures either. He instead spent a few years working out a different mathematical system for them, eventually coming up with something resembling string theory. He was, however, very fond of his Abra.)

So Austro-Hungary and its allies had giant robots. Tesla had put pokemon out. It didn't exactly seem fair, particularly with the time and effort to breed more pokemon and the large guns that could be placed on the robots.

Things changed a bit when:
