"Shit, there's a lot of them!" Locke said to himself as he fingered his dagger. He was more than decent in a fight... but these odds were impossible.
Lina for a moment cursed herself. If she had just put aside her excitement and worked at it, she might have access to more than just fire spells at the moment. Unfortunately, using fire spells while underground was tricky at the best of times. While practically immobile and with poor visibility... it would be near suicide to try and help. "Any ideas?"
Locke shook his head, and was about to say something... when they heard a sound unlike anything Lina had heard before... "Kupo!"
From the other exit of the cave stepped out some of the oddest creatures Lina had ever seen. Some were less than a foot high, others were slightly more than four feet, and each carried a different weapon. All of them looked slightly chubby, and were covered in white fur. Their heads were topped by cat ears and a strange antenna with a puff ball on the end. They had squinty little eyes and large colorful noses. Finally, each one sported small, bat-like wings on their back. And overall, they were... cute! Lina had to fight to repress the urge to say 'awwww' at them.
"I... I don't believe it! Moogles!" Locke whispered as he gazed upon them. "No one's seen moogles for decades now..."
"Kupo! Kupo kupo, kupopo po! Po ku, kupo!" One that seemed to be the leader spoke up. This one was about four feet tall, with a yellow puff ball and pink ears and wings. And it was carrying a shield and spear.
Locke blinked, trying to figure out what the fairy was trying to tell him. "You... want to help us out?"
The moogles all nodded.
"Well... thanks... I can use all the help I could get here..." Locke began, but stopped when the moogles all moved past him. The leader stepped in front of the others, who formed a half circle behind him.
And then came another thing Lina had never expected to see.
The leader set aside his spear and shield... and began to dance.
It was a slow dance, somber and mournful... it fit the feel of the cave perfectly. Lina could almost hear a song lamenting those passed on... and then she realized she was hearing a song. The other moogles were clapping their hands - paws? - together and humming, of all things. Still, while it was a beautiful performance, she didn't understand what it was supposed to do.
At least, not until all hell broke lose.
Ghostly fires suddenly lit up the cave, and began attacking the fiends. Sections of the roof of the cave began crashing down on the guards...
And the Marshal had only time to wonder, "what the Hell is going on here?!" before a pit opened up beneath him and he fell into the darkness below. Lacking their leader, the guards that still could ran off.
With a final beat, the moogle stopped dancing, and all was quite.
