Sandy had been getting very agitated the evening of the previous day and was getting extremely so during the early part of the morning. Despite repeated attempts to get the pokemon to calm down, it insisted on trying to lead or push people out of the mines.
Finally at 8pm, evolution occurred again. Now looking like a female humanoid who can speak a sort of pidgin - Sandy could communicate that there was a "bad gas, pressure big, go boomie" down the mines.
The reaction was panic. With the result that the explosion that might have killed over a hundred killed six. Sandy made quite an impression, crying and trying to dig to those missing even after her claws broke against hard rocks.
The testimonies, the photographs, and the story itself all had an effect on those hearing about it. Pokemon were known for bonding with people and making the effort to "join the human pack" as some biologists put it. That one had gotten to the point where limited speech and a near-human appearance had resulted was a major newstory. During the initial media reporting, this new evolutionary form was christened "Sandine" which edged out some of the other terms used.
It happened again. During one particularly harsh year of drought, a young homesteader in Australia reported that he had evolved his Geodude to something other than Graveler - which was what he had expected. Instead he had 'Geobabe' - a short female humanoid apparently made of grayish rock. He had used his Geodude for digging wells and irrigation and was apparently surprised by the change.
Not all pokemon could apparently make the switch, those who were able to do this were noted as having some "flaws" in their form prior to this alternate evolution. Sandy's Sandslash form had had soft armor and was thinner than usual. When tested it was found that less than 20% had the potential for proto-human status.
They could still be put in the clumsy pokeballs that were out, and healed/recharged by means of the devices in the pokecenters now coming up.
