As he was a boy who had not been very popular, he just wanted to be friendly with those around him. If those individuals were to become his buddies, then so much the better. And since he didn't really understand the concepts behind high level robotics, there was only one thing that he could do.
He smiled at them all and shrugged. "I figure that all of ya guys deserve names, ya know."
"Really?" Roll asked, frowning slightly.
"Well, if ya have a reason to be 'round others, then ya gotta have a name, right?"
"We do have something to call ourselves, if you mean that. But the thing is that a 'human' name is special. It means that we spend some time with a person, like you."
"Oh.... I get it," Ranma said with a nod, even as he glanced at a robot bird that was flapping around them. "If ya have a name, ya've connected with someone, right?"
"Exactly."
"Then, ya just call each other by machine names then?"
"Yes. You see, with humans, we mainly just go by model number and which place in the line we were made, or by the number we came in to the place were until we get names."
"So, if ya were the sixth robot there...."
The blonde robot girl gave him a look that said that she knew that he understood her. "You'd only be 'Number Six' until someone named you."
"That'd haveta suck."
"We can deal with it, but when we get human names, it's special."
"The way that I figure it, ya guys are already amazin'. I mean, I never knew that a metal bird really could fly."
"Oh, him? Well, I'll let you in on a little secret. He's not actually flying how you think. His wing beats aren't exactly used like a bird that you'd know."
"'Wing beats'.... I know! I'll call him 'Beat'!" the pigtailed boy cheerfully told her.
"You will?"
"Sure. I mean, I never had pets before, and he's kinda neat...."
"I see...."
Giving her a reassuring smile, he went to talk when he saw a red robot dog sniffing around his legs. "Cool. I'd wanted a dog. I don't know if ya'll be mine, but I'll call ya 'Rush', 'cause ya seem to be in a hurry."
A little robot bumped into him and made a sad and apologetic sound.
"Don't worry. I ain't bout ta get made at ya. But.... What's this 'EDDE' thing here? 'E-dee'?" Nah, that's a girl's name, I think.... I know. 'Eddie'! And your big friend here'll be... 'Auto'!"
"You seem to be enjoying yourself," Roll told him with a small smile.
"Well, everyone seems ta be happy with what I'm doin', so it's good. Right?"
"Right."
"That's what I wanted ta be happenin'," he told her, while:
