In this multiverse, there are several realities. It is very hard to travel between realities, even for beings as powerful as Metallia or Jenova. Even for trusty guardians of concepts such as time and space (best example is Sailor Pluto). Even Gods and Arch Demons would have a hard time bending the concepts of realities.
The difference of realities: Many things stay the same, whereas many other things change. Mostly the people living in different realities have the same look, name, and in many cases, even the same personality.
In Ranma Saotome's case: In the generally known reality, he was being raised on earth as a martial artist. In another world (a magical world which name is long forgotten), he and his father were not martial artists, but mages. Instead of dedicating his life to the martial arts, he dedicated it to the arts of sorcery.
A dimension is an entirely different concept from a reality. Dimensions are worlds that are existing next to each other, separated only with thin walls. But only very few beings are able to cross these walls. Only with sufficient power and knowledge, these barriers could be opened.
Mostly, the residents of different dimensions are totally different from each other, as the dimensions themselves. They have no 'dimensional counterpart'. That means that in an adjacent dimension to the aforementioned magical world, there just IS no version of Ranma Saotome.
Sometimes, certain people get lucky. They stumble over something that allows them to cross the barriers between dimensions.
In a neighbor dimension to the magic world, there was a modern world, with a high level of technology - and many corrupt bureaucrats and businessmen.
One of the richest businessmen of that world (its name was forgotten as well), named Mr. Kuno, one day found an ancient book that was originally from the magical world. To make the story short: He summoned a demon from that world and bound it into his services. Sadly, this demon was a powerful arch demon and was able to build portals that lead to this world. With the power of the demon, Kuno blackmailed the inhabitants of that world. By tricking several of their rulers, he made them sign a binding contract, made by the demon. Through its powers, the world's rulers had to follow the contract, or their world was doomed.
And, using this trick, Mr. Kuno did one of the most evil things possible:
He turned the magical world... into a tourist attraction!
