And it had gone so wrong. Hurt friends of his more than any enemy ever had.
At the time, it had been necessary. Their true enemies had been coming for them. No, for their children. He had to send them away so that they would be safe from harm.
Most had made it back. One way or another, the children had been brought back from the dimensions he had sent them to. The longest one had taken a full year. By the end, the child's parents had been nearly worried out of their minds.
The last child had been gone sixteen years. Gone at the tender age of four, lost to an unknown dimension. At the precise time of departure, the circle had been disrupted by unpredicted forces and the spell had surged out of control. There was no way to tell where he had gone without knowing the exact disruption and its introduction point.
It had only been through blind luck that Dr. Theodore Diggers, finest Arch-Mage on two worlds, had found the child while conducting a routine survey of cross-ethereal currents. The boy's aura had activated a device the good Doctor had created for just such a purpose. After sixteen long years, the terrible wrong done to his friends could finally be righted.
The sound of his study door opening drew Dr. Diggers' attention. The child's parents were here, looking just as severe as when he had last saw them. Relations between them and him had been strained at best, downright hostile at worst. Not that he could blame them. He was responsible, after all, for spiriting their child away from them for nearly his entire childhood years.
As they neared the light, he could see their faces.
"Dr. Diggers, where is my son?" demanded:
