"The sword is special. It will never grow dull and shall always make a clean cut, when wielded by a woman of my family. For all others, they will find it as dull as an metal bar. It has protections so that no demon or monster may touch it. But its most important power is that it is a lens."
Kasumi blinked. "A lens?"
Nodoka nodded. "Yes. Women of my line, or men of my line in emergencies, can use the sword as a lens, focusing their spiritual energies. That is the true power. With the sword, even I, mostly untrained in the use of my spirit, was able to create powerful attacks." Nodoka paused for a moment in thought. "I shudder to think of what Ranma would be capable of if the sword deemed the situation as dire enough for him to use it."
Kasumi nodded. Ranma had already demonstrated that he was strong enough to destroy mountains if he desired to. His power focused by that sword... Kasumi swallowed reflexively. "It is a good thing he has no desire to do evil, then."
Nodoka nodded. "Yes. Strange though it may be, Genma did manage to give my son a strong moral code. Not always a correct code, but a strong one."
Kasumi wanted to get her off the topic of her late husband. "And you used to fight along side Mother, and our Uncle?"
Nodoka nodded again. "Yes. Some foolish wizard had let several powerful demons into this world. I met them while trying to destroy one of them. After that, we started working together to clean up the rest." Nodoka sighed, and smiled softly. "Your Uncle, Akira, was very handsome, and introduced himself by stopping that demon from skewering me. I was smitten right away." Nodoka's smile faded as she continued. "But I guess it wasn't meant to be. The final demon was the most powerful one that had been released. It badly wounded me and your mother before escaping over into China. Akira chased after it. A few days later, we felt the demon die... or at least, it was sent back to hell. But Akira... never returned."
"I'm sorry."
Nodoka smiled. "So am I. You girls would have all loved your uncle."
Kasumi and Nodoka sat in silence after that, each contemplating their own thoughts...
