"That will be enough of that," the visitor then said as the hand was lowered. "As for who I am, Lum, I am someone who has come to help you understand why Ataru has died. And what will happen to his spirit now."
Lum blinked as she took those words in, and then she watched -- with but her eyes; the remainder of her body was still locked up by whatever it was the visitor had used on her -- as the stranger walked over to a nearby light switch. One flick of a button later, she found herself gazing at a human male, distantly resembling the Scottish actor Sean Connery in the twilight of his years. He seemed to be dressed in a white cape which extended to the floor, that covering a simple white button shirt and black slacks. The hair was slate-grey and extended to the level of his collars, his face covered by a stringy beard and moustache which nearly obscured his mouth.
It was his eyes, however, that made Lum stare at him. Or rather, it was his eyes which made Lum want to stare anywhere else but him, but there seemed to be something holding her attention in place. They were totally recessed in shadow, the barest glint of something infernal -- was it that? -- barely peeking out from that all-encompassing blackness. Lum had, for all her experience travelling through space throughout her short life, had never seen an image quite like that.
It scared her.
"Who are you?"
Hearing her voice croak out that question, Lum then tried to suppress a gulp.
Had she actually asked that?
The visitor seemed to gaze at her for a moment, and then his beard and moustache twitched into what seemed to be a smile. A very mirthless smile, one without even the barest hint of humour in it. "My name is not relevant. But in recent times, I have been given a most interesting appelation by which others have come to refer to me as. You may call me Destructo. Doctor Destructo."
Silence as Lum took that in, and then she . . .
