Usagi had wanted to talk to Naru before school, but her habit of not actually getting out of bed until Luna woke her up the third time had resulted in her being nearly late for school—and while this was a definite improvement over her previous standard of “really late for school,” it afforded her very little time to get any communication in. Thus, it was not until the first break in their classes that she actually had a chance to talk to her best friend.
“Hey, Naru, are we still on for that movie tonight?”
Apparently, the redhead had been lost in her own thoughts, as she seemed a bit startled by Usagi’s question. “Huh? Oh, uh, yeah, Usagi. We’ll be meeting around six at the Crown Arcade, right?”
“Right.” Usagi couldn’t help notice that her friend seemed down in the dumps. “Is something wrong.”
“It— it’s the Senshi thing. I know you say that we can trust them, and you’re probably right, but… but I’m still worried. I wish I knew why I always end up in trouble when they get new enemies.”
Usagi sighed. Naru was essentially repeating the same conversation that they’d had yesterday, and she couldn’t think of anything that might assuage her friends doubts, short of actually admitting that she was Sailor Moon. Thus, she tried a variation on one of the counterarguments she’d used before, in the hopes that it might stick this time. “Naru, are you sure you aren’t overreacting? I mean, sure, those monsters can be scary, but that’s no reason to worry obsessively about it. After all, it’s not like they would have a reason to specifically target you.”
“But… but that’s the way it always goes—surely there has to be a reason.”
Usagi was a bit stumped—even she had to admit that Naru found herself entwined in their enemies schemes a lot more often than most people. But that just had to be coincidence, right? Surely, it only seemed like things like that happened more often to her. “Well, can you think of a reason why it would be happening to you?”
“No… but what if there is a reason that I always end up in their messes, and I just can’t think of one?”
“Well,
“I know, it’s just… I just wish there was some way I could be absolutely certain that I’d be okay, you know? Or at least, that I could have some way to protect myself if something happened to the Senshi. I mean, who knows what’s going to happen next?”
“I’m sure that they’ll be ready for anything.”
“But how do we know what they do when they aren’t fighting anyone? What if they get sloppy?”
“They’re not going to get sloppy.”
“But how do you know that?”
“I… I just know, okay? They’ve never let anyone down before, and there’s no reason to think that they’ll start with you.” Usagi needed to change the subject—fast. Fortunately, this was relatively simple. “What you need right now is a nice, stupid-yet-entertaining movie to make you forget all your problems—which is why we’re going to see Amazon Tree Frogs on a Spaceship.”
“Usagi…”
“I’m serious, Naru! It’s amazing what mindless escapism can do when you’re feeling down, or stressed out—it’s worked for me dozens of times!”
“I have a hard time imagining you feeling ‘down,’ Usagi.”
“Obviously, you haven’t been paying attention when I get my grades.”
“Point—though they have been getting better, right?”
“Yeah; that’s mostly thanks to Ami’s tutoring, though.”
The mention of the blue-haired class genius brought up another question in Naru’s mind. “Usagi, why is it that you never ask me to do things that your other group of friends are doing?”
“Hey, you’ve done stuff with them before.”
“Not very often, and most of the time, it was something I was planning to do anyway.”
“Oh, well, um… you see….”
“Do they… do they not like me?”
“No! Definitely not that. It’s just that… well….”
“Well, what?”
“Look I’d like to tell you, but some of them are sort of secretive—”
“You aren’t doing anything illegal, are you?”
“What? No way! It’s… kind of hard to explain. At least, it’s going to take more time than we have right now.”
“Are you ever going to tell me?”
Usagi paused for a second—she didn’t want to make a promise she couldn’t keep. On top of that, given Naru’s current doubts about the Senshi, there was now way of knowing how she might react. But then again, there would eventually come a time when everyone would know who she was, and now that Usagi thought about it, Naru probably deserved to know. “Yes. As soon as I can—but that might be a while.”
Naru sighed, and then she grinned. “Alright—but I’m going to hold you to that.”
Usagi giggled a bit—it was good to see a smile on her best friend’s face again. “Sure thing.”
