OK, time to see the other things the scanners wanted to show her...
The Kaiou Mitsuko slowly wheeled up the ramp through the whirling snow. Her husband, Yuuki, was still futilely trying to wipe the snow out of his front windows.
"Just why did we end up making a baby in Hokkaido, again?"
Mitsuko sighed, and decided not to remind her husband that he was the one who'd wanted to go someplace in Japan for a change their annual trip. And running around the Hokkaido roads with stopovers at the local small inns had actually been rather fun, once she'd gotten used to the idea, but...
"At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if our child ends up being a snowmobile or something."
Yuuki groaned. "Not funny, Mitsuko."
Neither of them mentioned what was really bothering them. The baby was ...late.
Oh, baby Cars could take a long time to be made, they both did know that, but most kinds of Car babies were popped out of the various Factory Complexes in about 6 months to a year after the Core ball went flying in, the average being about 9 or 10 months or so. To take more then a year...
Well, it was worrisome, to say the least.
Mitsuko looked at Yuuki and sighed. Both she and her husband were the sporty smallish Station Wagon types, definitely not the over-specialized types, and neither of them had taken that long to be born, as far as they knew...
Damn. Damn. Damn.
They'd made plans for the first couple of months after they'd seen the Core go whizzing off into the skies - oh, it's not like they'd been planning to spark a kid right then, to be made in a Hokkaido Factory to boot, but it's hadn't been a entirely unwelcome development either. Yuuki had drawn up plans after plans of where they could go touring together - but now...
Mitsuko hope feverantly that the child wouldn't be stillborn. Or born with severe disabilities, or severe retardation, or...
Yuuki was saying something to her. Mitsuko blinked.
"They've called our number!"
The Kaiou's wheeled forward, watching the ramp leading up from the Factory complex avidly.
The baby Car inched up the ramp, blinking cutely at all the Cars watching her.
"It's a...it's a...what?" Yuuki gulped. Mitsuko stared. There was a vague resemblance with both herself and her husband, but this child wasn't a smallish Station Wagon, that was for sure...
"Whoo, look at those lines. Elegant, ain't she?" Somebody behind her muttered. Mitsuko blinked.
"It's a girl Car?"
"Well, I'd hope so, with those coloring and those lines..."
Mitsuko looked again. The sea-green and blue patterns were very nice, she did have to admit. And her general shape and lines were very aesthetically pleasing, to say the least, but...
And then the baby Car began to open and retract her roof.
"...She's a convertible??" Mitsuko groaned.
"What's that all over her back seats and...and, um, luggage area?" Yuuki asked, sounding shell-shocked.
"Musical instruments, we think." The white-and-grey-painted attendant, who had sneaked up next to them, said briskly. "Synthesizers, amps, you name it, she has it. As well as some things we, ah, just haven't been able to identify yet."
"Arrgh!" Mitsuko and Yuuki shrieked in unison. "Don't do that!"
"Sorry, sir and madam. You have a daughter, and she's perfectly healthy and hale as far as we can tell."
"That's good." Yuuki murmured, staring wide-windowed at the roof of his daughter. Which had opened up, like a sea-shell or something. And was...spreading itself out?
"As you see, she's basically a Speciality type, musically oriented as far as we can tell. The roof is interesting - it actually seems to double as some kind of low-tech amp, or something, and apparently has many configurations - the better to protect the instruments, we think."
Mitsuko and Yuuki both stared at their daughter. She peered back, curiously, and blew her horn at them.
"...She's healthy." Yuuki murmured. "That's...good."
"And she's really pretty, too..." Mitsuko sighed, then. "But she looks so - so high-maintanance!"
"Well, the doctors recommend regular check-ups for Speciality Types anyway, sir, madam. Well, everybody should get them, but - " The attendant murmured, but neither of the Kaidou's were really listening any more.
"Well, here goes then..." Yuuki muttered, wheeling towards his daughter.
"Right. - Hey, wait for me, I'm the mother!" Mitsuko followed her husband, somewhat nervously.
"Have you decided on a name yet, sir and madam?" The attendant called after them.
"Later!" Yuuki called back, and turned towards his wife. "The other names we thought of beforehand don't seem to fit, somehow..."
"Oh, we'll think of something, I'm sure." Mitsuko wheeled closer.
"She's sort of sea-colored, and the lines remind me of waves. What about Michiru, or something like that. For the tides coming in, you know?"
"Ahhh." Yuuki murmured. "That's a nice name..."
Pluto stared at the scanners. Alright, she - or one of the beings she had been merges with - had seen this Kaiou Michiru before, but -
That was one Specialized Car, alright...
But a pretty damn elegant and good-looking one, though, and that was important, she supposed. Not to mention that she looked pretty smart and healthy, which was the really important part.
Well, OK, then. Time to try scanning some more, she supposed... " Mitsuko resolutely wheeled forward. "Hi, baby!"
