Ranma accepted it, but left it in his hand.
"Thanks, but no, Nabiki." A small, small voice warned him; and he paid attention to it. "It's like why I don't carry an umbrella. It could interfere in fightin'." He swung it like a fan. "See? It catches on the air."
"So, it'll come off automatically."
"I'd probably lose it; or it'd get destroyed. -Somebody finds it, they could maybe use it against me." He was mainly thinking of voodoo, but there were other ways that could happen. He didn't want to go into the details, because he thought the educated girl might think some of them stupid.
"Or you could use it as a weapon."
"A weapon??" That was an idea. Setting down the coffee, he turned it in his hands, thinking of how it could be. "But it's just made a straw." He balanced its rim up on one finger. "And it's light."
"Okay, it'd take some thought and practice... ." She searched her database. "...Did you ever hear about straw going through a tree?"
"Really?!" He hadn't.
"A typhoon can do it. That's just wind that has force and speed."
"Hey: I got those!" He said standing up. He took aim at a hanging banner."
"Ranma, not there! It'd be like trying to punch your way our of a paper bag."
"I ain't aimin' for the banner." He tossed the straw hat like a Frisbee.
It caught a bad breeze, and landed a few feet away. But he didn't let that stop him. After a few more attempts, his natural martial arts' ability had adjusted his mind and body to the proper degree.
The hat whizzed up like a flying buzz saw and severed one of the lines that was holding up the banner. In triumph, he jumped up to catch it, and cut the remaining line.
Water splashed down from a woman who had lost control over her wash basin.
Ranma was protected by his shield.
"Sold!!" He cried, happily putting on the hat.
"It'll be even more effective if it is made of fiberglass, or graphite," Nabiki was pleased, too.
"We'll see. Right now, I think of this as my lucky hat." Yep! This is the first time my water magnetism didn't get me!
