TimeSlip: Unexpected Development [Episode 178211]

by Kestral

Things were not going well for Colony Ship 282.

The Homeworld was rapidly becoming uninhabitable due to the tech-trickle effect. That was simply where technology developed as cutting edge became more and more available until eventually it would show up in the hands of individuals. Despite all their accomplishments, individuals could still be idiots. A plague bacillus was developed and unleashed as striking out against a neighboring country. It wasn't even targetting their own species, instead it was targetting a plant. Of course, things mutated and spread - and their homeworld was now experiencing a major atmospheric composition effect. With the overpopulation, food riots, and now wars breaking out everywhere as a Doom hung over their heads - some of the more affluent nations came to a radical solution.

They built huge ships and sought out new worlds, understanding the basics of such things, coldsleep and they would set up colonies on entirely new worlds. Things went well at first. CS-282 was staffed primarily as a "terraforming" ship with the vast equipment bays set up to produce genetically tweaked species if the world was too different from the world they'd started out from.

9 light years took 128,000 years for the trip. Things could go wrong during that period of time. Still, the original builders had done a particularly good job with those considerations in mind. Between the launch and the arrival, a sentient species had begun migrating across the target world.

"We've been in cryostasis for longer than we were a civilization on homeworld, and now look at this."

"Well, it's not like we've got the supplies to go anywhere else. We HAVE to land here."

"There IS some good news. Ecosystem of Trev-III comes across as almost exactly perfect, depending on what area we settle in. Some areas are almost home, other areas are fairly hostile."

"Which pretty much fits the 'almost home', duh."

"Still the world has native sentients. Where did THEY come from?"

"Like I said, we've been in cryostasis for an oomphing long time. It wasn't as if we had FTL. So what do we do about it?"

"There's an area with minimal native habitation. Let's set up there. We construct walls to keep the interaction with native species to a minimum. Then we can make long term plans while we make use of this world's resources."

"Well, at least SOMEONE's thinking things through. Got a specific location? 'There' covers a pretty sizable range."

"This desert area on this continent."
