And so, after listening to the Lantern’s plan and dropping Arrow on the ground, the three super-powered beings took off to join the fourth and left the green guy with the bow standing on the sidelines with his arms crossed and a scowl on his face.
“That’s right you bunch of showboats, go on and steal all the glory,” he mumbled, more than a little angry at being sent to the sidelines because he couldn’t survive a megaton blast. Hell, they wouldn’t have even bothered to do anything if Green Arrow hadn’t gone in first, and now he was just supposed to sit back and watch the show.
Halfway to the monster, Captain Atom broke off from the other three and started to fly around behind Brimstone. Green Lantern fired a few short bursts to draw the monster’s attention and keep it from tracking Atom.
Brimstone ignored the silver-skinned man and aimed at the target that was attacking the giant robot. A weapon arm raised, charged, and fired.
In case the thing could keep a continuous beam active instead of the short bursts Green Arrow described, John waited till the last possible moment to get the group out of the way of the attack. “SCATTER!”
Ranma went left, Kara right, and John flew below the attack as it reached their group. The blast faded, and Captain Atom got in position behind the robot before he began to siphon energy from the top of the monster’s burning skull head.
“Common, common run outta gas damnit!” the former air force captain shouted after only a few seconds of draining the giant’s power.
Brimstone took a step forward, and stumbled to its knees.
Captain Atom gritted his teeth (or a close approximation of teeth as he was a being of pure energy) as he felt himself approaching his containment limit. He reached up and activated his communicator. “Lantern, I don’t think this is going to work, I’m almost full up and I can still feel plenty of juice coming from big ugly down there. It’s a safe bet this thing’s just gonna get back up when I stop draining him, any other ideas?”
“Switching to plan B,” the former marine replied before he singled the others to increase their speed.
What followed in the next few minutes had the Chinese military officials rethinking that a single giant robot with a flaming skull and big guns for hands would have been able to protect them from invaders. First, one bossy black guy with a fancy ring created a large green chain around aforementioned robot in an X pattern. Then, two little girls that looked like they should still be in school slammed into the giant engine of destruction with enough force that the impact was felt half a mile away. Brimstone fell backwards, but didn’t hit the ground as the two little girls grabbed onto the chain and lifted the multi-ton killing machine into the air. At that point the two little girls and the two former members of the American Military flew into the upper atmosphere, and out of sight for most of the people on the ground.
The one guy that thought to bring binoculars continued to watch the spectacle. The monster flailed its arms but was unable to do anything about its restraints as the design of its body didn’t allow Brimstone to reach them, and the man who’d created them was now flying underneath the creature in its rather large blind spot. Once they had gone high enough, the two girls swung the robot around, most likely in some semblance of actually needing to build momentum, before hurling Brimstone out of Earth’s atmosphere where it would either crash on one of the Sol system’s other planets or eventually be picked up by the gravitational force of the sun and end up there; if spaceflight capable hero didn’t just fly out and blow the thing up before then of course.
Meanwhile, the victorious heroes were wondering if they were…well…victorious…
“So…did we win?” Kara asked John, remembering to switch to Japanese for the last part of the question. Captain Atom didn’t look like he understood, but she didn’t care, guy would have to take that stick out of his ass before she started giving much of a damn about his feelings.
“From what my ring says, the thing seems to be shutting down,” Lantern told her in English. “Not surprising, I doubt they programmed it to deal with space travel. We can send a cleanup team after we head back to the Watchtower.”
Ranma raised her hand to try and get the green guy‘s attention. “Uh…”
“That means we won,” Kara explained to their non-English speaking pseudo-teammate before turning back to Lantern and trying to phrase her next question. “By ‘we’ you mean…”
“All of us, her and Green Arrow included,” he told her. “We just had a fistfight with a walking nuclear reactor. We all need to get checked out and make sure there aren’t any major health concerns.”
"Um-"
"You included Atom," John ordered.
