Switching Places/Eva!-Switcheroo!: Shinji Talks, Ranma (Mostly) Listens [Episode 179476]

by Linnara

Ranma looked at Shinji. Shinji looked back.

If this was a dream, it had to be one of the weirdest dreams that even Ranma could remember having...

Though on the other hand - hey...Could it be that this entire mess was a dream? Starting with the Lamp and the genie, and being 'exchanged' with Ikari Shinji from Evangelion and all?

Ranma felt almost elated for a moment - but then, deflated, pretty swiftly. Yeah, yeah, having actually been flipped into the Eva-verse by Nabiki's attempt not to mis-word things did seem pretty unlikely, but then, his entire life had been filled to the brim with things that most people probably would consider to be very weird indeed, so...

Chances are, this really was real. Well, shit.

Shinji looked at him and sighed.

"Just for a moment, you just thought that maybe, just maybe, this entire mess was a dream, didn't you?"

"...Um, yeah. What, you can read my mind?"

"No, not really I don't think, but we are sharing the same dream now, you know. And I've been wishing that this entire thing was just a damn dream, starting out from my father actually wanting to see me in person for a change instead of throwing more and more money at my Uncle and Aunt so they'd stop bothering him about how sensitive I am and how horrid I am with making friends in general and maybe it'll be better for me to go live with my father yadda yadda yadda. Since, you know, I don't seem to take after my mother at all, according to what I overheard from some of my other relatives talking, anyway..."

Shinji stopped, took a deep breath, and rubbed his eyes. Ranma stared, trying to process all of what Shinji had been gabbling.

"What - wait, wait, your father paid your relatives to take care of you?"

"Well of course he did, he's the one with this really mysterious high-ranking hush-hush goverment-connected job, with all those nifty 'connections', after all..." Shinji sighed, then.

"There was one time when my Uncle and Aunt actually went off to Tokyo-3 to see him, you know? Even if they didn't take me. And when they came back, they suddenly had the money to rebuild the hanare, make it all spick and span, just the perfect room for me, you know? I'll still be in the premises, and they could always find me if they wanted to, and there was even this interphone in case we wanted to say something to each other without yelling across the garden in the rain or something, but otherwise, the only time they'd see me was at meals or when I came home from school or something. Oh, and when Auntie came to bid me good night, or whenever somebody wanted to scold me about something, I suppose. Not that I didn't like the privacy, once I got used to it, and I could practice the cello and stuff all I wanted, and nobody complained if I watched TV late at night as or something as long as I kept the noise down, but..."

Shinji sighed, again. "Oh, and they bought new cars after that, too. ...I'm not saying they treated me badly, y'know? They bought me nice stuff, and they gave me this big allowance too, as I grew older, much more then most of the kids I went to school with, I think, but..."

Ranma hmmm'd, thinking about his life with his father. Yeah, yeah, that had been a laugh a minute (ha, ha!) in some ways, but...

"And then, at long last, your father calls you to Tokyo-3 - and you don't even manage to get there."

"Yeah, yeah... I get stuck in your world instead. Ha, ha. - Except that... There's some things.... Hmmm." Shinji looked at Ranma, then.

"That's why I was asking if you'd read 'Ranma 1/2' already, you see. Because, I've seen a little bit of Nabiki-san's 'Evangelion' DVD's already, but..."
