Naru looked around. "Mai? I'm still confused about Kusanagi and how it relates to you, Hikari, and Saya."
"That is simple if you know the tale of Lleu Llaw Gyffes," Mai replied with a rueful smile. "Gwydion turned Kusanagi into a human being and the three of us are descendants of that sword."
The Sailor Senshi and Naru blinked in shock.
Mai shook her head is resignation. "Gwydion turned flowers into a human girl to bypass a curse that was laid on his nephew. Technically, I'm a descendant of the royal family of Earth of the Silver Millennium."
Doro snapped his fingers. "That's right. If the Silver Crystal is found and we can't find the reincarnations of the Moon Princess or Earth Prince before your eighteenth birthday, the titles default to you, because of your holding the Spirit Throne and the fact that one of the royal items of that time has been found."
"Please tell me you're joking," Mai stated in a pleading tone.
"Sorry, Mai."
"Default to you?" Luna asked. "What does that mean?"
"It means, unless we can find the reincarnations of both by the time of my eighteenth birthday, I will take the royal titles of Earth and Moon. If we can only find one, I will gain that title. You are hunting for your princess. If you can't find her in time, I will become the new Moon Princess. Please find her!" Mai explained nervously.
While everyone, save Mai and Doro were taking in that little bombshell, Usagi frowned and thought about the situation.
"That might actually be for the best," Sailor Moon stated. "You are decisive and highly skilled and know the current situation far better than she might."
"Still, keep hunting for her," Mai said in a frantic voice. "Being a warrior of love and justice is bad enough, I don't need to be a princess on top of it."
"Not princess, Mai. You would be queen," Doro corrected with a smile on his face.
"That's even worse!"
After a bit, Mai calmed down and shook her head. "I take it until we find them or when my eighteenth birthday rolls around, I am the current Moon Princess and Earth Princess."
"Not quite yet. Once Hikari and Saya have a piece of the Silver Crystal, then you are," Doro explained.
Mai rubbed her forehead in resignation and sighed heavily.
"She does look the part, doesn't she? I mean, she is wearing a crown," Naru stated.
Luna and the Sailor Senshi looked at each other in shock and then at the top of Mai's head. On it was a gold crown with three large gems set in it. Mai reached up and touched the crown.
"I thought that was only decorative," Mai stated.
As the group sat there in silence, amused silence in the case of Doro, time passed. Saya and Hikari returned with a small bag and the Moon Wand. Hikari's dog named Sabi followed them.
"Rei? Did you know that you are one-quarter Youma?" Saya asked. "Your grandfather had one of the Rainbow Gems in him."
"Huh?" Rei asked in shock.
Hikari opened the bag and rolled the six gems they had onto a table "Yep. We also found the missing orange gem. We have a good clue on who the penguin is that took the orange gem. I think you call him Tuxedo Mask."
Mai sighed heavily and picked up the blue gem and stared at it. It and the other gems glowed brightly and left the table and started hovering around Mai. The glow from the gems got brighter and brighter.
"Doro? What's going on?" Mai asked nervously.
"Moon Princess hasn't been found yet. They are responding to the current holder of the Spirit Throne," Doro stated.
The glowing reached a crescendo and a red gem flew into the room and headed straight for the center gem on Mai's crown. The yellow gem quickly followed it and the others followed in succession, using the way they were aligned in a rainbow. A glittering silver gem replaced the central sapphire of Mai's crown and the two emeralds on either side glowed brightly for a second. Mai reached up and tore the crown from her head.
"Let's lock this thing up in a vault," Mai stated.
"Mai? You have the will to control that artifact and that is probably the best place for it to be," Doro replied, laughing a bit.
"On my head is the best place for it?" Mai sarcastically asked.
"Sure. You are the best of the Makendo and no one has ever taken your crown from you," Doro replied, and took the crown from Mai's hand and put it back on her head. "Unless the Moon Princess is found, you might as well get used to it, your highness."
"Knock that off. We will find her," Mai stated.
"Excuse me? What's going on?" Saya asked.
"My sister is a princess? How did that happen?" Hikari asked.
Makendo 2 and Makendo Z were brought up to speed on the situation with Mai and why the Silver Crystal responded to her and merged with her crown.
"Mai is the crown princess of Earth and Moon until we find the reincarnations or until her eighteenth birthday in which she becomes queen and the two of you become crown princesses. Hikari will get Earth and Saya will get the Moon Kingdom," Doro explained.
Mai pointed at the Silver Crystal in her crown. "I don't want this responsibility. We have to find those reincarnations fast. Before you say a word about it Hikari, being a princess means no more going around and fighting criminal spirits. You hate formal affairs more than I do."
"I'll have to check in with Central Control and tell him about this situation," Luna stated.
"Please do and see if there is a way out of this for me," Mai replied.
"At any rate, until the reincarnation of the Moon Princess is found, the Sailor Senshi are your bodyguards," Luna continued.
"No offense, but they need training," Mai stated.
"We'll take care of that cousin," Saya said with some amusement at Mai's predicament.
"I'll go with Luna and talk to this Central Control she mentioned," Doro said.
Makendo 2 and Z led the four Sailor Senshi to one of the training rooms and Sabi went with them. Doro left with the Moon Cat, leaving Mai and Naru alone. Mai sighed heavily and looked at Naru.
"I didn't think my life could get any more annoying. Being a magical girl is fighting really weird things while wearing really ridiculous clothing and is very annoying. Now? I'm the princess of the Spirit World and the long ago Moon Kingdom. As soon as the Silver Crystal showed up, it sensed I was the current regent of the Spirit World and chose to make me the princess of the Moon Kingdom, which then made me current princess of Earth. I hate my life."
Mai buried her head in her arms, as they rested on the table. Naru suppressed a laugh and looked at the older girl in sympathy.
"Mai? Even though you have given reasons why you dislike being a magical girl, do you think with your current status, you can make me a magical girl?" Naru asked.
Mai raised her head and stared at Naru. "Why?"
"I don't want to lose my friend Usagi. She has this and we'll just drift apart if we don't have more in common," Naru explained.
"Friendship? I guess that's a good enough reason. I have never begrudged Saya for her abilities, since she did that to help Hikari and I out."
"Huh?"
"There were only two Makendo devices. Saya created her own to help us out and when she first used it was to save our lives," Mai replied absently. "You have a load of power that is neither Makendo nor planetary energy. Saya and Ami will have to work on creating a transformation device for you that will tap into you unique energy pattern."
In the Dark Kingdom, Zoicite and Kunzite were staring at a small dish that had the red Rainbow Crystal on it. They looked at each other and took a deep breath and quickly found Queen Beryl.
"Your majesty? Something has come up," Kunzite said nervously.
"What is it?" Beryl snapped.
"The red crystal left under its own power after glowing brightly for a second," Kunzite replied and winced.
"Zoicite! Hand me the Black Crystal!"
"Yes, Queen Beryl," Zoicite stated and held out the crystal.
Beryl used a bit of magical energy and the image of a girl appeared over the crystal. The girl was wearing what looked to be a variation of the Sailor Senshi outfit and was wearing a crown.
"Makendo!" Zoicite hissed.
Beryl stared hard at the image and finally noticed the crown on Makendo's head.
"The Moon Princess," Beryl stated. "The Silver Crystal has revealed itself. We must find out who Makendo is and get the Silver Crystal away from her."
