"And that's a wrap!" Linna told her class. She glanced up at the cloud covered sky. "Hopefully it'll hold off a little ..."
A sudden crack of thunder cut off Linna words. A moment later a barrage of rain began to slam into the buildings expansive windows as more and more lightning strikes resounded across the city. Then the lights died.
Linna looked through the storm induced twilight at her class, and called "No problem, just the storm knocking down power lines." Her eyes slid sideways to the battery powered emergency light on the wall. It remained dark. 'Hmm, that should have... don't want to worry everyone, I'd better not point it out. It could be a maintenance problem.' "You all stay here and wait for the lights to kick back on, I need to check on the weight room just in case."
Linna strode quickly to the automatic doors to the weight room. Then she paused. 'Right, no power, so I guess I'll have to pry them open.' She turned her head looking for an appropriate tool, then turned back as she heard a ping just before the doors slid slightly apart. "Ah, good old Kintaro..." Her praise of her coworker died as the doors suddenly slammed open with a loud crash, forced apart by the towering form in the doorway.
Linna's eyes slid upward. The figure was easily eight feet tall, with four massive muscular arms attached to it's barrel chest. As Linna looked into the glowing red eyes that seemed to dominate it's face, part of her mind was already screaming "Booma!" Keeping her eyes on the threatening form, Linna began to back slowly away, tensing in readiness as it's head pivoted toward her.
"Linna?" It's voice was deep and resonant, and seemed filled with confusion. "The emergency lights aren't coming on, so I figured I ought to check on your class." His head snapped up as the women in Linna's class began to scream. "What?" The figure pivoted, looking all around him. "Why..." He came to a halt, raising one hand to touch the top of the doorframe. "This was a lot smaller earlier..." he whispered, his voice filling with shock.
Linna's eyes widened. She was getting used to the rain induced twilight, and with every second she could see more and more similar details about the figure. "Kintaro?" She asked quietly.
The figure turned back toward her. "What the, I thought you looked smaller, but it..." He paused, looking at two of his hands, then raising the other two and looking at them all together. "How the hell did I miss growing another pair of arms?"
Priss had just taken a bite out of her burger when the storm broke. She looked up toward the widows of the fast food place, seeing the sheets of water and the percussion of raindrops, and felt glad she had taken the extra few seconds to push her bike under cover.
She chewed her mouthful of food, but then her chewing slowed as she looked at the thunder illuminated glass. 'Something just arrived,' she suddenly realized. As the lights in the restaurant suddenly failed, she accelerated her chewing and swallowed.
Pulling out her cell phone, she opened it, scowling as it initially flickered, refusing to turn on. A quick smack to the side and it was on again, and rapid dialing Sylia's number. As she listened to the rings, Priss took another bite of her burger.
While listening to the ringing, Priss had time to finish chewing and swallow her mouthful, and was raising her burger for another bite when she heard the click of an answer. "Sylia?"
"Priss?" Mackie's voice responded. "Is something wrong?"
Priss looked up toward the dead panels in the ceiling. "Are your lights on?"
Mackie paused a moment. "Well, the storm knocked out the mains, but the auxiliary power's going. Why?"
Priss looked out into the storm. Toward the red and blue highlights that she felt more than saw. "I'm not sure, it's a feeling. Tell Sylia... Tell her it's something I don't wanna talk about, and I'll be right over." With a snap she shut her phone and put it in her pocket. She glanced at her other hand, and took a bite of the hamburger she was still holding. "I'll be over as soon as I finish this."
