Considering the fact that her mother was a Viera, that was perfectly understandable.
The race was one that appeared to many outsiders to be entirely based of women, which had caused some members of the 'scientific community to have 'fits' as they tried to figure out how such a culture would continue to be a viable culture. Not that the Viera themselves were helpful in that regard, as they mainly kept to themselves. They were a deeply spiritual people who had a very personal connection to the forests that they built their communities in. There was even a question of whether they were colonizing or immigrating to the Earth, as they had an odd way of settling in.
To tell the truth, Makoto, or 'Mako', as her mother's people called her, and her mother were the 'odd ducks out'. Her mother had left the forests that she'd called home when she'd met the human man who would become Makoto's father. He had been staying with some friends on a trip to a mountain inn during a break during his college semester, and had hit it off with her. Her desire to experience, and be among, the outside world had led her to join him, and when the new semester started, she was a student there.
As happened with many a 'college sweetheart', the two married, and settled down to a life that was fairly normal. They had a home, a child, and lives that were filled with the sort of love that only a truly happy couple could have.
Even as a small child, Makoto proved that she was benefiting from both her parents influences. She was faster, and more agile than the human girls of her age, but she was also stronger, and more hardy than many Viera girls. In fact, she took to the forest like a duck to water, as she could really let loose and enjoy the physical activity, and her especially deep to Earth life. The other Viera might have claimed a bond with any forest where they might dwell, but she seemed to have a way with Terran animals, and, particularly, plants.
That hadn't helped when her parents had gone on that flight, but not even Viera reflexes could save a life once the crash direction became final.
Fortunately, she had good friends who were well suited for getting her over it. Both boys were tenacious, and simply did not stop until their friend at least got to have a chance to get some light back into her life. Ryoga was rather protective of her, with a tendency to get really annoyed with anything that bothered her, and wanting to defend her from whatever that would be. On the other hand, Ranma would tease, prod, and nudge until she'd act, and never let things be stale at all.
Of course, she could hold her own, as Setsuna could see as she watched the girl bounce and bound around both boys, who might have been stronger, but who were not as fast as she was. It made for an interesting game of tag, as she was too fast to catch easily, and they were too strong to be blocked for long. As the sight of alien children was becoming more common, others merely smiled indulgently at the happy little trio, and didn't give it any more thought than they would for their own broods.
"At least she's happy," Setsuna murmured with a sigh, while:
