½ Flux & Anchor: Practice [Episode 183727]

by Kestral

Nodoka was the person who dominated the Anchor (which some called a fluxland, but others felt that 'fluxland' was misleading) but hers was not the only influence.

Ranma also had his input, nor was he alone.

Hotaru extended two fingers, bringing them up parallel to her nose and a few inches in front, while her other hand extended outward. "Nin nin nin. Sagitta magica. Aer Capturae!"

Ranma dodged, spun, ducked, and otherwise avoided the missiles which impacted the floor around him. "Twelve missiles? You're improving."

Hotaru nodded, her expression tense as she otherwise concentrated entirely on the battle. "Deflexio."

"Well, I'll just have to take this more seriously," said Ranma, though he was grinning. This was going to be fun.

POOM! POOM!

Makoto looked up from her oven. "Sounds like they're working up an appetite."

"Yes," said one of the other maids. "Stew?"

"No, I'll stay here and cook," said Makoto.

"Ah," said the maid, not bothering to correct the busty brunette.

Michiru and Haruka slid into the kitchen, waiting for their chance.

Nodoka Saotome was largely a passive individual, though she WAS a very powerful sorceress in terms of being able to manipulate flux. However, when she was stirred from passive to a more active role - she could be quite a force to be reckoned with.

She normally spent time in the room at the very center of her Anchor, where she could monitor and adjust conditions as was needed. The edge of the Anchor was twenty-five miles away, though the last five miles was ocean - even though you had to get to a height to see that from this far in.

The reason she was walking the halls of Castle Saotome was the feeling of a discordance. Not on the outer rim, which might have indicated duggers trying to attack (though that was WHY she had ringed the land with water - it certainly slowed down any invasion) or a rival Fluxlord or Fluxmage offering challenge.

It was subtle and hard to pin down, but it was like an off-chord in background music. The discordance drew her attention to something being wrong and was close enough to be somewhat alarming. This close it posed a potential threat.

Yet it didn't seem threatening of itself. Just that it didn't belong.

Nodoka walked through her Castle, and tried to find the thread which didn't fit so that she could determine exactly what was wrong.

Passing a window, she stopped and smiled at the sight.

"Doppelganger technique!" cast Hotaru, making eight shadow-copies of herself as she sparred with Ranma.

No, there certainly wasn't anything wrong there. Ranma and Hotaru made such a cute couple, and the devotion Hotaru had for her son was quite obvious.

The smile faded slightly as she observed that someone else was observing the two.
