TimeSlip: The ball drops into the slot [Episode 184855]

by Kestral

Bent-Leg returned to the tribe, though now in need of a name change.

His leg was no longer bent, and he came with food. Food that the tribe desperately needed.

The Chief had not gotten to his position entirely by strength of arm. He immediately renamed the former Bent-Leg as Speaker-To-Wind, a shaman.

Bent-Leg went to the sky-spirits every year for ten years, then his daughter Dancer-To-Wind replaced him as the new Speaker for another twenty.

It was in the time of Speaker-To-Wind's grandchild's shaman journeys that things changed again.

"Great Air Spirits, I come before you to ask where the rains are," asked the shaman.

"Elk-Before-Wind, grandchild of Speaker-To-Wind we hear you," came the reply as a ghost formed under one of the bee-birds. "However, the reply is as far beyond you as you are now as a hawk flies over the field. Though many lessons were given to your grandfather and mother, the tribe has not changed its ways."

"This is so," admitted Elk-Before-Wind. "What would you have us do, Great Spirit of Air?"

"The Tribe must learn and apply what they learn, or break up and follow the herds," said the spirit. "The rains will not come for long seasons now, and what falls will not quench the earth until beyond your child's child's child's time."

"I've often wondered how well our translations are doing."

"Yeah, I considered trying to explain to him that the local conditions are drying out - and how the climate of this part of the world is changing. Unfortunately," said Rah Nar, "the choices they face are those I explained. If they go completely nomadic, even the level of technology they have now will be lost. If they go to the development of wells and cisterns - they'll still lose quite a few of their number."

"No chance of intervention then?" asked Loh Pah.

"We've only been able to trade them small metal tools for plant and animal samples," pointed out Rah Nar. "What are the odds?"
