Birth of a Legend [Episode 1857]

by Thrythlind

The sound of crashing glass woke Ranma from her sleep. She looked around warily, worried that perhaps the criminal element was appearing in yet another unlikely place. She quietly stood up and dressed herself before proceeding out into the dark halls to track down the source of the sound.

It was easy to trace, as the sound of a storm outside could be heard coming in through the broken window in a room just ahead. She remembered passing it earlier. It had been a study of some kind.

Walking cautiously into the study the first thing that caught her eye was the great bat that was sitting upon one of the chairs and staring forward. She gasped and bowed very politely to the creature.

"Sumimasen," she whispered hurriedly, wondering what the spirit that she saw was doing here. She was also a little worried. The last time she had seen and felt anything like this, her entire life had been turned upside down. "Are you here for me?"

"No," a voice said. "I had hoped not to disturb you."

At first Ranma thought that it was the bat speaking, but it was merely flying back out into the storm. And that was how Ranma first noted that the chair facing away from her was occupied.

She recognized the voice from a brief meeting at her sifu's dojo, however.

"Wayne-san?" Ranma said, surprised. She moved around the chair to face him and gasped at the obvious wound in his side. "Oh dear, what has happened?"

"I was a little careless driving," Bruce said, apparently thinking something through. Ranma moved forward cautiously to investigate the injury, unconcerned with the obvious blood.

"Driving," Ranma scoffed, brow furrowed. "Curious sort of accident to strike only one such blow and leave no other marks." She looked to the blood pool and frowned deeper. "You have been sitting with such greivous injury without seeking aid?"

She stood straight and crossed her arms in consternation at such wasteful behavior, managing to draw at least a brief smile from her host.

"You have a point," he said, standing up and pulling a rope near his chair. Ranma heard a bell sound further into the house. "Alfred shall be here soon and attend to matters. I shall be fine."

"I do not think so, Wayne-san," Ranma said. "It would be improper for me to let my host alone in such a condition."

"Isn't it improper to be alone with me?" Bruce countered.

"Perhaps under other circumstances," Ranma said firmly. Any further comment was put off by Alfred's arrival.
