MacArthur peered through the dirty plastic at the figure entombed within, and entombed was the right word - cables and wires and hoses came out from the pod and coiled down to a truly massive piece of machinery he hadn't noticed upon his initial inspection. He assumed the device was some sort of life-support system and power source but the workmanship screamed early CE with imprecise cuts and screws, that it was working at all (and it was if the green light at the top was any indication) was a miracle! He had to get the pod back into the colony.
But how? He didn't have the tools to dig the capsule out of the rock and he certainly couldn't open it...he'd have to swallow his pride and radio to the Commander about his 'find'.
There wasn't an answer. Typical.
What MacArthur didn't notice was the silhouette of a Nazca-class ZAFT ship pass over one of the solar collectors. The Le Creuset Team's infiltration of Heliopolis was successful and Dearka and Yzak were returning with the X-Series prototypes.
At the moment that Kira Yamato activated the Strike and proceeded to kill Miguel Aiman, MacArthur was cresting the rocky outcropping at the edges of the colony. The sight that met his eyes was enough to make him vomit inside his spacesuit.
Bodies, dozens of them, floated out of the open blast hole were the OMNI dry dock used to be. Faces mere pulp trailing spheres of icy blood from the collars of their uniform, MacArthur was able to pick out the severely burned body of the Commander by the size of the uniform and the blood-stained pips at his neck. Apparently the Commander had died before being jettisoned into space.
MacArthur really hadn't thought about the ramifications of his sudden physical reaction and panicked when he realized he would have to vent the vomit through his outtake hose just so he could see.
However, a drifting piece of rock shaken loose from the ZAFT attack quickly crushed MacArthur's plans and also his body.
At least he didn't suffer like the poor men, women, and children that couldn't make it into a lifeboat did when Heliopolis breached. He was spared the pain of facing his death, his last thought was about vomit, and he didn't even see the rock hurtling towards him.
When Heliopolis' main generator exploded and the stores of nitro primers went up, the archaic life-pod MacArthur had found was dislodged from its stone cradle and sent hurtling into space.
