Evangelion Reborn: It all starts with a dream... [Episode 186697]

by Shritistrang

In 2000, a large being of light appeared at Earth's north pole. Researchers called it ADAM.

Experiments caused Adams systems to go crazy, and he exploded, causing what was since then known as the SECOND IMPACT.

15 years later, Earth would be attacked by gigantic, monstrous beings called ANGELS. A group of courageous youngsters, piloting enormous battle mechas called EVANGELIONS fought them back.

Still, in the end, the plans of the organizations called NERV and SEELE prevailed... the plans to bring humanity to its next step of evolution.

And while all human beings on earth have been transformed into a single, protoplasmic mass of what is known as LCL, in the middle of the wasteland, a lone boy sat, clutching the limp body of a red-haired girl...

----

Shinji gasped as he sat up in bed. Panting heavily, he tried to catch his breath, while sweat was pouring down his skin.

"A dream..." he groaned. "It was just a dream..."

He sighed and looked around his room. The morning sun was shining in, illuminating the wooden walls and the carpet-covered floor. Outside, the birds of the woods were chirping their songs.

The door to his room then opened, and a vision of beauty appeared, clad in a green dress, carrying a tray with breakfast.

Shinji smiled. "I could get used to that, waking up every morning like this."

His wife smiled down at him. "Charmer. But I wonder if you plan on getting up soon, or if you'd rather stay in bed all day."

"I'm getting up, I'm getting up," he quickly said.

Asuka put down the tray on the table and sat down next to her husband. "Dear, you look awful. Didn't you sleep well?"

"Ah, just had a bad dream, that's all," Shinji sighed.

"Poor thing," Asuka cooed and petted his forehead. "The same one as always?"

Shinji nodded. "Yeah, but every time I'm having it, things are becoming clearer. I wonder what all of this means..."

"You worry too much," Asuka said. "Come, have some breakfast, and you'll forget about your worries."

Shinji smiled at her. "Did I ever tell you how much I love you?"

"You told me that often that I lost count," Asuka smirked. "Still, I'd like to hear it again and again. Because I love you too."

Shinji raised an eyebrow. "Oh, do you now?" he asked teasingly.

"Of course I do, Baka-Shinji!" his wife grumbled. "Now hurry and eat up, we have to get to work."

----

After breakfast, the two newly-weds said their goodbyes as they left for work. Azusa was working in the weaver's shop, while Shinji was working on the fields.

Shinji crossed the small river that was flowing through the village on the wooden bridge. As he came past the chicken farm, the farmer's two little children came running outside.

"Hi Shinji!" the boy, Kensuke, shouted. "Come, play with us!"

Shinji chuckled. "Sorry, no can do. I have to go to work, see?"

The girl, Hikari, looked up at him. "Shinji, how do you feel, now that you married Asuka? I saw her at the wedding, you know? She was sooo beautiful! One day, I wanna be a bride as well."

"I'm pretty sure you'll find a nice boy one day," Shinji assured her.

"Hey, Shinji!" Kensuke then said. "One day, I kicked my ball too hard and it flew in the forest. I found it easily, but I also found this strange wall of swirling lights and stuff. I touched it and it prickled my skin. I wanted to reach through it, but it was like a solid wall. My dad always told me not to go too far from the village, but... what was that?"

Shinji decided that his work could wait for a few minutes. So he sat down next to the children and explained:

"You know, no one of us can really leave this village. It is surrounded by that wall you just mentioned. It surrounds our huts and houses from all sides, and no one ever succeeded in breaking through. One time, a man got the idea of digging a tunnel underneath it, but the wall reached deep underground. Others tried climbing it, but the surface was too smooth."

"Awesome..." Kensuke whispered. "Why is that wall there?"

"No one really knows," Shinji continued to explain in a mysterious voice. "It has been here since everyone can remember, and no one knows what lies behind it. Still, as we have all we need within our village and the woods surrounding it, does it really matter? We have our families and friends, so we should focus on our lives instead of yearning for a world outside of our village what we can't reach at all. You got that?"

"Y-yes, I think so," Hikari said. Kensuke nodded.

Shinji grinned and ruffled the boy's hair. "Good. Now, I really have to go to work now. Catch you later!"

"Yeah, bye!"

But as Shinji arrived at the vegetable fields, he couldn't help but wonder what was really out there, behind this wall. It has become a part of the villagers' lives, but no one really knows that much about it.

Is there really a world beyond that wall?

"Well, if there is, I sure hope it doesn't look like the world I always see in my dreams..." Shinji muttered.
